The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to drop fast bowling all-rounder Brydon Carse from the England squad for the upcoming second Test against Pakistan. The board confirmed the same on a trail of Carse’s explosive handcuff video that went viral on social media this past weekend.
It is worth noting that Carse also did not made it into England’s playing XI for the series-opening first Test against Pakistan at Leeds last week, as he was playing for the Durham cricket team in the 2026 County Championship Division Two game.
ECB drop Brydon Carse from second Test
On Monday, August 24, the ECB confirmed that Brydon Carse will not be considered for England selection for the upcoming second Test of the three-match series against Pakistan at Lord’s in London later this week.

The ECB added that they are still investigating the controversial Carse footage that emerged on social media this past weekend. The board also implied that Carse will not be considered for selection, at least until they can obtain “full facts” of his involvement in the controversial Derby incident.
Brydon Carse’s handcuff controversy explained
On Saturday, August 22 last weekend, England fast bowler Brydon Carse was spotted being led away from a nightclub by police in Derby. Much to everyone’s surprise, the cricketer was also in handcuffs at the time.
A short video of the same circulated on social media where Carse can be seen surrounded by police officers. During his ordeal, he was also simultaneously speaking with Durham teammate Matthew Potts.
It is worth noting that former England captain and legendary all-rounder Ben Stokes also featured in the background of the footage.
The incident occurred shortly after the conclusion of Durham’s comprehensive 338-run win over Derbyshire in a 2026 County Championship Division Two match in Derby. The following day, the ECB stated that the board is investigating the incident and will provide a further update soon.
Who will replace Brydon Carse in 2nd Test vs Pakistan?
The ECB has named Sonny Baker as an official replacement for Brydon Carse in the England squad for the upcoming second Test match against Pakistan at Lord’s in London.
Baker has previously played just one Test for England, doing so against the visiting New Zealand team a couple of months ago at The Oval in London. The 23-year-old picked up three wickets to mark his international debut, before getting dropped by the ECB for the first Test against Pakistan this month.
Carse incident latest in a series of embarrassing England episodes
The ‘Brydon Carse handcuff’ controversy is just the latest in a series of ugly episodes involving England cricket players within the past 12 months alone.
Just a couple of months ago during England’s home series against New Zealand, all-rounders Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were involved in a nightclub incident in London with a rugby player.
Back in late-2025, Harry Brook and Ben Duckett both faced disciplinary scrutiny and public attention over separate off-field drinking incidents in New Zealand and Australia respectively. The incidents prompted the ECB to impose a strict curfew on England players.
As of now, it remains to be seen how Carse will be impacted by his involvement in his incident and whether the ECB’s investigation could lead to further disciplinary action against the England fast bowler.
