Team India has seized full control over Sri Lanka by stumps on Day 2 of their series-deciding second Test at the SSC Ground in Colombo. However, senior wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant did not take field for India during the final few overs of the day before stumps, owing to an injury.

Pant’s absence prompted fellow Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel to take over the gloves late on Day 2. Jurel has now dropped a huge shocking update regarding the injury and the potential recovery timeline for the explosive middle-order batter.

It appears that Rishabh Pant has now picked up a new injury in Colombo during India’s second and final Test of the tour. While speaking with the reporters after stumps on Day 2, Dhruv Jurel confirmed the same and stated that Pant has been feeling pain on his shoulder.

Jurel also added that the BCCI medical team and the physios are closely monitoring Pant’s recovery, and the explosive wicketkeeper-batter might attain full fitness and joins the team by tomorrow on Day 3.

He said “Rishabh Pant ke Kandhe me Chot Lagi hai, aaj unke Shoulder me Dard tha, Physios closely monitor kar rhe hai, hopefully kal woh fit honge.” (Rishabh Pant is feeling pain in his shoulder. Physios are closely monitoring him and hopefully he will get fit and ready to play by tomorrow)

What happened to Rishabh Pant?

Rishabh Pant, batting at number five, arrived to the crease at 186-3 after the fall of captain Shubman Gill in the 52nd over on Day 1. The cricketer reached 3* off 15 balls before coping a blow on his wrist from a short ball of Lahiru Kumara.

While Pant did not appear to be in pain, he subsequently received medical attention before ‘retiring’ off the field. The explosive wicketkeeper-batter resumed his innings on Day 2.

After seemingly recovering from his wrist injury, the cricketer now seems to be undergoing severe shoulder pain, as per his teammate Dhruv Jurel.

Despite battling a wrist injury and a shoulder pain, Pant punched out 63 runs off just 89 balls after resuming his innings at the crease on Day 2. The cricketer launched six cracking boundaries and two huge sixes to bolster India’s scoring rate.

The attacking left-hander also surpassed former captain MS Dhoni in the process to become India’s most successful wicketkeeper-batter in overseas Test matches.

Fellow stumper Dhruv Jurel also composed a sizzling hundred, scoring 115* off 177 balls with nine boundaries and two sixes as Team India declared the innings at 503-9d from 138 overs late on Day 2.

As of now, it remains to be seen if Pant can return to the field and assume his wicketkeeping role for the Indian cricket team tomorrow on Day 3 of the ongoing series-deciding second Test match in Colombo.
