Time and again, England, the founder nation of cricket, has found itself embroiled in off-field controversies, with nightclub incidents raising serious questions about squad discipline. Despite heightened scrutiny and stricter team protocols, multiple high-profile national stars have made headlines for late-night mishaps.
These recurring incidents have frequently overshadowed performances on the cricket field.
From physical altercations outside overseas venues to police interventions on domestic soil, these off-field distractions have repeatedly disrupted England's preparation and focus ahead of crucial international fixtures, including multiple Ashes series.
Growing list of England cricketers found embroiled in illegal acts off the field
Over the last ten years, several English players, including the former captains and veteran batters, have faced disciplinary action, board fines, or police inquiries for off-field incidents, ranging from nightclub altercations and curfew breaches to historic betting and alcohol-related code violations.
That said, arranged in chronological order, here’s a list of English cricketers who have been caught breaking laws in the last decade.
1) Ben Stokes: Bristol Nightclub Incident (2017)
In the early hours of 25 September 2017, following a match against the West Indies, former England captain Ben Stokes became involved in a violent street fight in Bristol alongside teammate Alex Hales.
Stokes was arrested at the scene after two men, Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale, suffered injuries. Hales was present but ultimately not charged by the police.
The all-rounder was formally charged with affray, a charge denoting public fighting, and stood trial at Bristol Crown Court in August 2018.

Stokes pleaded not guilty, claiming he intervened to protect two gay men from homophobic abuse. The jury found him not guilty of the affray charge after a multi-day trial.
Despite his acquittal in court, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) subjected Stokes to a Cricket Disciplinary Commission hearing, resulting in backdated bans and fines for bringing the game into disrepute.
The scandal forced Stokes to miss the entire 2017–18 Ashes tour to Australia, a significant sporting absence during the peak of his career.
2) Jonny Bairstow: Perth Bar “Headbutt” (2017)
During the 2017 Ashes tour, England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow was involved in an alleged "headbutt" greeting with Australian batsman Cameron Bancroft at the Avenue bar in Perth on October 29.
Both players later downplayed the event as a harmless, albeit bizarre, gesture with no malice.
The England and Wales Cricket Board launched a formal inquiry but opted against suspending or punishing Bairstow after interviewing him and reviewing the context.
Bairstow, Bancroft, and coach Trevor Bayliss all addressed the media to dismiss the seriousness of the reports.
3) Ben Duckett: Noosa Intoxication Footage (2025)
In December 2025, the England squad had to spend four nights on the Queensland coast between the second and third Test in the ongoing Ashes series.
During the time, several media outlets, including the BBC, reported that some players were drinking for a significant portion of their time in Noosa, the beach town in Australia.
On top of that, a video was shared on social media which appeared to show England opener Ben Duckett drunk.

The ECB launched an investigation to establish the facts surrounding the player’s behaviour during the team break. However, no major misconduct beyond routine social drinking during scheduled downtime was found. Duckett later publicly apologised for the off-field distraction.
Earlier, Duckett was dropped from the England Lions squad during a tour of Australia in 2017-18 after pouring a drink over England bowler James Anderson.
4) Harry Brook: Wellington Bouncer Altercation (2025-26)
The incident took place on October 31, the day before the third ODI in Wellington. After being refused entry to a nightclub because the English white-ball captain, Harry Brook, was suspected to be too drunk, Brook became embroiled in an argument with a bouncer and was struck.
Brook self-reported the incident to the team’s security and was not injured as a result of the physical contact.
Soon, an investigation led to the 26-year-old being fined around £30,000 by the England and Wales Cricket Board, though he successfully retained his white-ball captaincy.
5) Brydon Carse: Handcuffed after nightclub incident (2026)
On August 22, England fast bowler Brydon Carse found himself under investigation after an incident at a nightclub in Derby, as confirmed by the ECB.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show Carse being led away from a club in handcuffs by four police officers, during England’s Test series against Pakistan.
According to the latest reports, Carse was briefly detained at the scene but was not arrested as he returned to the team hotel afterwards.
Apart from the solitary statement that revealed the whole matter, the ECB has not given any further update.
