BCCI's new diktat jeopardises Shubman Gill's T20I career [Source: AFP]
Shubman Gill's T20I comeback delayed further, as the experienced batter failed to find a spot in the India squad for the upcoming UK tour. On Saturday, the BCCI selection committee announced India's squad for seven T20I matches against Ireland and England combined.
While Shreyas Iyer officially replaced Suryakumar Yadav as the captain, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi pipped the likes of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, joining Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson as the backup opener for the UK tour.
Shubman Gill ignored for UK tour and Asian Games
Led by Shreyas Iyer, India will travel to the UK for multi-format white-ball assignments against Ireland and England in the June-July window. After that, the Men in Blue will feature in the Asian Games, a marquee event that will witness its cricket competition run from September 17 to October 3.
Despite performing admirably for Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill failed to make it into the India squads for the UK tour as well as Asian Games. Bihar's 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was fast-tracked into the Indian team, while Gill was ignored for the showpiece event.
Notably, Shubman Gill made a wildcard entry into India's T20 World Cup 2026 plans just prior to the Asia Cup 2025.
Although he had worked on his scoring rate, Gill's failure to score runs consistently scripted his ouster, with the BCCI selection committee reinstating Sanju Samson at the opening slot and drafting Ishan Kishan back in the mix.

However, as he had performed magnificently in the IPL 2026, scoring 732 runs at an average of 45.75 and a strike rate of 163.03, Gill certainly gave his heart out for turning his T20I comeback dream into reality.
The wait continues for Shubman Gill as BCCI issues fresh directive
While Shubman Gill's absence in the India squad for the Asian Games and UK tour raised a million eyebrows, a report has revealed that the BCCI won't consider him for T20I selection until the conclusion of the 2027 World Cup.
It's worth mentioning that Shubman Gill leads India in Tests and ODIs. Therefore, apart from featuring in India's remaining nine Tests in the ongoing WTC cycle, Gill will play as many as 35 ODIs before the start of the 2027 World Cup.
Being the captain of the team, Gill is bound to participate in these 44 international fixtures in the upcoming 18 months. So, the BCCI doesn't want India's premier batter to get exhausted by burdening him further with the T20I responsibilities.
"The selectors are concerned that there shoudn't be a burn-out case with Gill. Gill has to lead India in nine WTC Tests and also play around 35 odd ODIs before the start of 2027 World Cup. The communication is clear that he needs to be fit for these two ICC assignments," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.
"Plus he will play the IPL where he leads Gujarat Titans. There is still a lot of time left for the two marquee T20 events in 2028. For Gill, the focus is on immediate future. Two years from now, no one knows which player will be in what kind of form and fitness. So this is the plan till 2027 ODI World Cup," he added.
BCCI's horses for courses approach to end Shubman Gill's T20I career?
Therefore, if the report is to be believed, Shubman Gill is not going to make a T20I comeback at least until the 2027 World Cup gets over.
So, the only T20 tournaments he will get to stay in contention for the 2028 T20 World Cup are the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy and the IPL.
The likes of Abhishek, Samson, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are already ahead of Gill in the pecking order for the opening slots in the Indian T20I side.
Given how Sai Sudharsan and Prabhsimran Singh have performed, Gill's T20I comeback dream could be shattered if he lets his team down in the upcoming SMAT and IPL editions.
Despite blowing hot and cold in the shortest format, the stylish batter has been one of India's most valuable assets in ODIs and Tests.
The BCCI understands Gill has a lot to offer in the longer formats and hence has adopted a typical 'horses for courses' approach to keep him fit and available for the WTC and World Cup assignments.
However, it's fair to say that his absence in the shortest format has opened the doors for Sooryavanshi, Ishan, Abhishek and Samson to cement their spots. If these players perform on a consistent basis, it will be a daunting task for Gill to make it into India's squads for the LA Olympics and 2028 T20 World Cup.
