The Chennai Super Kings claimed their 5th win of the season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, getting the better of the Delhi Capitals in a crucial four-pointer clash. Following a brilliant display with the ball, Sanju Samson anchored a comfortable chase of 156 runs to dent DC's hopes to progress in the competition.

They have also improved their net run rate, chasing down the total in just 18.1 overs, and whilst still sitting 6th on the table, they are now well within touching distance of the playoff spots.

As they look to finish yet another season in the top-4, we take a look at CSK's qualification scenarios, heading into the final round of fixtures.

How can Chennai Super Kings qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs?

Since Ruturaj Gaikwad took over CSK's reins in 2024, the Men in Yellow have yet to qualify for the playoffs. On the virtue of the net run-rate, they finished 5th in 2024, which was followed by arguably one of their worst IPL seasons in 2025, when they finished 10th, and Gaikwad was also ruled out of the competition midway through the season.

This time around, after starting the season with three consecutive losses, they have pulled things back and won 5 of their next 7 fixtures. Usually, 16 points is a safe spot to be in for any team to qualify for the playoffs. At times, teams can also qualify with 14 points on net run-rate, as RCB did in 2024.

However, with 10 teams in the competition, and three of the top-5 already on 12 points each and one on 13 points, it is highly unlikely that CSK would qualify with 14 points, although they have a positive net run rate.

Basically, with 4 matches remaining, CSK needs to win at least 3 matches to qualify for the playoffs without depending on other teams. Two of their remaining matches are also four-pointers, and winning them directly puts them into the playoffs.

What are Chennai Super Kings’ remaining games of IPL 2026?

Having played over 2/3rds of the league phase, the five-time IPL winners have four matches left to be played. They will face the Lucknow Super Giants in the next two consecutive matches, followed by the clashes against the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans, which will be the four-pointers, as they also fight for the top-4, respectively.

With this 87-run knock, Samson has broken into the top-5 of the Orange Cap leaderboard for the season. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has scored 251 runs as their second-highest scorer this season with two fifties as well.
