England captains sanctioned by ECB [Source: AFP, x]
Captaincy in international cricket extends far beyond tactics and decision-making, with those entrusted to lead their respective national sides often finding themselves under relentless public and media scrutiny. In a sport where reputation carries immense weight, even a captain’s “off-the-field” actions can have significant consequences.
The latest controversy involving England Test captain Ben Stokes is a prime example, considering the legendary all-rounder is now on the verge of losing his captaincy following allegations of off-field misconduct.
Including Stokes, here is a look at some of the other instances involving England national captains who have faced sanctions from the ECB.
England captains who have faced ECB sanctions for off-field misconduct
1. Harry Brook
Harry Brook was captain of the England team that toured New Zealand in October 2025 to play three ODIs and three T20I matches.
On the night of October 31, i.e., a day before England’s final ODI of the tour in Wellington, the cricketer was involved in a “nightclub bouncer incident” in the New Zealand city.

Brook was out drinking and was apparently “clocked” by a bouncer while trying to gain access to a late-night party venue.
While England’s white-ball captain initially claimed that he was on his own, the cricketer later admitted that he was also accompanied by Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue during the incident, and had only lied to protect his teammates.
Harry Brook nearly lost his white-ball captaincy gig owing to his Wellington theatrics, considering the ECB and the team management contemplated stripping him of his leadership role.
However, the attacking batter later walked away with a £30,000 fine and a final warning from the ECB.
2. Mike Atherton
Mike Atherton led the England team during their home Test series against the visiting South Africans in July 1994. On Day 3 of the first Test at Lord’s, television footage showed Atherton removing some substance from his pocket and applying it to the ball.
With many perceiving Atherton’s actions as possible tampering with the ball, the England Test skipper was later summoned by match referee Peter Burge.
While the seasoned pro maintained his innocence to the referee, it was later revealed that the skipper had 'some substance' in his pocket.
For allegedly misleading the match referee about the substance in his pocket during the initial inquiry, the ECB fined him £2,000 for failing to disclose the full truth to the officials, a record fine for an England captain at the time.
3. Kevin Pietersen
Kevin Pietersen was the captain of the England ODI and Test teams between August 2008 and January 2009.
While the legendary English batter led his side in just three Tests and nine ODI matches during the five-month period, his short stint was marred by an intense controversy with then England coach Peter Moores.
Both Pietersen and Moores were at complete loggerheads with each other over various issues like tactical direction, selection policies and the general running of the national team.
At one stage, the dressing room environment of the England cricket team even became “unworkable”, with the situation coming to a stage that either Pietersen or Moores had to go.
In January 2009, the ECB sacked Peter Moores as England coach, and forced Kevin Pietersen to resign from his captaincy.
The legendary English batter was also involved in numerous other controversies after his removal from captaincy, and a horrible Ashes tour led to his early retirement from international cricket at the age of just 34.
4. Ben Stokes
Under the leadership of Ben Stokes, England crushed New Zealand by 115 runs at Lord’s in London in June 2026 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
It now appears that the match may have been Stokes’ final Test as England skipper owing to his involvement in the “nightclub” incident, also involving teammate Gus Atkinson and a player from the Saracens Rugby Club.
Both Stokes and Atkinson allegedly breached team protocols by attending a nightclub shortly after England’s comprehensive first Test win over New Zealand.
In a statement, the ECB confirmed that an incident took place in a nightclub where both Stokes and Atkinson were present, and the board will now only name England’s squad for the second Test after an investigation against the two cricketers takes place.
If found guilty, Stokes might lose England Test captaincy for good, and there is also a strong possibility that the legendary all-rounder will be excluded from the national squad in some capacity.
