In a significant development, the Bangladesh government has decided to approach the Jay Shah-led ICC to discuss the future of the BCB after a controversial T20 World Cup debacle. Bangladesh missed out on the T20 World Cup 2026, as the Jay Shah-led ICC replaced them with Scotland in group C alongside the West Indies, England, Italy and Nepal.

The Tigers were scheduled to play their group-stage matches across two Indian venues- Kolkata and Mumbai- in the T20 World Cup. In their absence, Scotland locked horns with the other four teams in the group but failed to make it into the Super 8 stage.

However, as the Bangladesh cricket team eyes redemption, the government has formed an investigation committee to probe the irregularities and diplomatic failures that led to their non-participation in the showpiece event.

Investigation committee formed in Bangladesh to probe irregularities in the BCB

After the BCCI terminated Mustafizur Rahman's IPL 2026 contract due to political tensions between India and Bangladesh, the BCB refused to send its team to India for the T20 World Cup.

Although the ICC warned the BCB of severe consequences, the Bangladesh board maintained its stance, demanding a neutral venue for the Tigers' group-stage matches. As a result, the Jay Shah-led ICC expelled Bangladesh from the competition and replaced them with Scotland.

While the apex cricketing body ensured that no action would be taken against Bangladesh for not participating in the tournament, the Bangladesh government decided to investigate the diplomatic failures that led to their T20 World Cup debacle.

As a result, Bangladesh's new sports minister, Aminul Haque, formed an investigation committee to look into the matter.

The committee will also probe the allegations of corrupt practices and interference of influential personalities to tamper with the BCB elections last year.

Bangladesh sports minister to discuss the future of BCB with ICC

As reported by ESPN Cricinfo, the Bangladesh sports minister will go through the report submitted by the investigation committee. After that, he will conduct a dialogue with the ICC to discuss the future of the BCB.

If the investigation committee discovers that the BCB elections were manipulated, the sports minister might take strict action on the cricketing body after consultations with the Jay Shah-led ICC. This is the reason why the BCB had reportedly requested the government to dissolve the committee

"We are all aware of direct interference from our previous government in the BCB elections last year. I have spoken about it on a number of occasions. Following allegations from Dhaka clubs and the districts, we have formed an investigation committee. I will read their report, but my next step will come after I have spoken to the ICC," Aminul Haque was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

Bangladesh script historic ODI series win vs Pakistan

While the BCB and the Bangladesh government remain at loggerheads, their tussle hasn't affected Bangladesh's on-field performance.

Led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the Tigers recently defeated Pakistan in two out of three ODIs, thereby registering a historic series victory on their home turf.

Although they succumbed to a heavy 128-run defeat in the second ODI, the hosts held their nerves to seal a thrilling 11-run win in the decider at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium to bag the series.
