In a significant development, the Hyderabad Kingsmen have confirmed their captain for the PSL 2026 season. Despite the presence of ace Pakistan all-rounder Saim Ayub, the newly formed franchise snubbed him, appointing a surprising name as their skipper for the tournament.
According to the PSL 2026 schedule, the Hyderabad Kingsmen will cross swords against defending champions Lahore Qalandars in the first match of the PSL 2026. Ahead of the season opener, the Kingsmen announced an Australian Test specialist as their skipper for the showpiece event.
Saim Ayub snubbed from captaincy after T20 World Cup failure
Experienced all-rounder Saim Ayub had a decent start to the T20 World Cup, as he spearheaded Pakistan to a stunning win over the Netherlands.
However, his performance dipped with the tournament's progression, as he turned out to be a major headache for the Men in Green at the top order. Saim Ayub had an ordinary T20 World Cup campaign, finishing the tournament with 70 runs across five innings at a modest average of 14.

As a result, the PCB selection committee dropped him from the Pakistan squad for the Bangladesh ODIs before the Hyderabad Kingsmen shattered his captaincy aspirations in the PSL 2026.
Marnus Labuschagne to lead Hyderabad Kingsmen in PSL 2026
Although it was assumed that veteran Pakistan batter Hammad Azam would lead the Hyderabad Kingsmen in their maiden PSL campaign, the franchise ignored him, naming Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne as their skipper for the tournament.
Renowned for his gusty stroke-play, Marnus Labuschagne has captained Queensland in the First-Class and List-A formats. He has also played a pivotal role for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League.
The stylish Australian batter brings plenty of international experience and hence is expected to guide the Kingsmen to success through his batsmanship and leadership acumen.
Several reports had suggested that Labuschange might miss some PSL matches for the Kingsmen due to the geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. However, with the franchise confirming him as the skipper, the right-handed batter is expected to play the entire season for the franchise.
Marnus Labuschagne's T20 career and stats
Labuschagne has been a regular in the Australian Test side over the years. The 31-year-old has a rather modest T20 career, amassing 1381 runs at an average of 26.55 and a strike rate of 126.81.
However, he has all the ingredients to succeed in the shortest format, having showcased his credentials in the BBL for Brisbane Heat. The Hyderabad Kingsmen roped him in as a direct signing for PKR 5.88 crore ahead of the PSL 2026.
Hyderabad Kingsmen PSL 2026 schedule
According to the official PSL 2026 schedule, the Hyderabad Kingsmen will lock horns with the Shaheen Afridi-led Lahore Qalandars in their first match. They will further face Quetta Gladiators (March 29), Multan Sultans (April 1), Peshawar Zalmi (April 8), Karachi Kings (April 11), Islamabad United (April 12), Rawalpindi (April 16) in their subsequent outings.
