Australia cricketer Aaron Summers is staring towards possible jail time for sexually abusing a teenage girl. Back in September last year, he pleaded not guilty to child abuse charges and remained out on bail.

However, a few days ago, Summers changed his plea to guilty on two counts of “penetrative sexual abuse of a child and grooming with the intent of exposing a child to indecent material.”

It is worth noting that Summers has previously played Big Bash League (BBL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL) cricket in Australia and Pakistan respectively. The prodigious fast bowler was also once considered for national selection for the Australian cricket team.

As per the Daily Mail, Summers met a 15-year-old girl after exchanging messages with her on social media. The cricketer picked her up near her house and drove her to a local school where he abused her.

The speedster was arrested and extradited to Tasmania in 2025 after serving jail time for multiple child sex offences.

Lawyer says Aaron Summers faced a “difficult time”

Caroline Graves, lawyer of Aaron Summers, told the Tasmania Supreme Court that the cricketer committed the offence at a “difficult time” in his life. The lawyer added that Summers was feeling “socially isolated” at the time and was excessively using social media.

Caroline further stated that the cricketer has since developed insight into his crimes and he was at low risk of repeating the offence. She said “This offending will never go away from his mind but he does need to get on with his life.”

The lawyer added “At the time of the offending, he was one of the fastest bowlers in the world and that is why he was being identified to play internationally. He knows he will never progress into professional cricket in Australia or overseas.”

While Caroline Graves stated that a wholly suspended sentence should be considered for Summers, Justice Helen Wood ruled out the possibility.

As of now, the 30-year-old is expected to be sentenced in August next month. He is currently remanded in custody after being out on bail.

Aaron Summers: A career that could have been…

Born in Perth in 1996, Summers made his competitive cricket debut during the BBL 2017-18 season for the Hobart Hurricanes in Hobart. The speedster also played a couple of games for the Karachi Kings franchise in PSL the following year.

He additionally played seven List A games since making his One-Day debut for Tasmania during the 2018 JLT One-Day Cup in Australia. After getting shunned by Cricket Australia, Summers has played domestic cricket in Pakistan and took part in the Abu Dhabi T10 in Abu Dhabi back in 2021.

Once considered one of Australia’s most promising fast bowlers, his career now stands as a stark reminder of how talent can be eclipsed by criminal actions.
