Australia’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign has been disappointing, with two losses in three group-stage matches leaving them out of contention for the Super 8. Fans have watched in shock as a team known for global dominance struggled to find rhythm and confidence in this edition.

The biggest setback came against Zimbabwe in Colombo, followed by a crucial loss to Sri Lanka. Both games exposed missed opportunities and underwhelming performances, showing the team struggled under pressure in must-win situations, leaving Australia facing an early exit from the tournament.

Amid all this, questions arose over key management decisions, particularly involving veteran Steve Smith. His non-inclusion drew heavy backlash from fans and experts worldwide, forcing Australian selectors to clarify his role in the squad, adding another layer to the debate surrounding Australia’s unusual T20 World Cup struggles.

Steve Smith Non-Inclusion Sparks Debate Amid

Australia has come under intense criticism following a poor T20 World Cup campaign, with losses to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka leaving fans shocked. One decision that drew particular attention was keeping Steve Smith on the sidelines during a crucial stage, despite him being fit and ready for the must-win match, drawing heavy backlash from fans and experts worldwide.

Smith, flown in as an injury replacement for Josh Hazlewood, was expected to strengthen the side in Pallekele. Many believe his experience and excellent BBL form could have influenced the outcome, but he was left out, and Australia lost the must-win clash, ultimately leading to their early exit from the tournament.

Australian Selector Responds to Criticism Over Steve Smith Non-Inclusion

Amid all the backlash over Steve Smith’s non-inclusion in the game against Sri Lanka, Australia selector Tony Dodemaide, as reported by Cricbuzz, clarified his role in the squad. He emphasized that Smith was brought in primarily as backup and was not intended to be a guaranteed starter for the must-win match.

"We see him [Steve Smith] primarily at the top and that is where he has come into the squad as cover for that area. Smith was only really available for the game against Sri Lanka where we had our best performing pair in Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, who did extremely well,” Dodemaide said.

Smith was included as backup for doubtful Mitchell Marsh, who remained available for the Sri Lanka game. Dodemaide also highlighted that the opening combination, including Travis Head, did well against Sri Lanka, and Smith’s role was meant as backup. This explanation aimed to address fan concerns and provide context on the selection strategy.

The Reasons That Cost Australia in the T20 World Cup

Australia’s poor buildup to the T20 World Cup, including heavy losses to Pakistan in challenging subcontinent conditions, set the tone for a disappointing campaign. Despite being one of the tournament favorites after a strong 2025, injuries and questionable decisions contributed to their struggles.

The handling of Steve Smith particularly made things worse. Not being part of the original squad, despite his experience and excellent form with the Sydney Sixers, was a huge blunder from Australia. Even if an opener spot was not available, the management could have considered him elsewhere in the lineup, as his presence might have changed Australia’s fortunes.
