Over the years, Australia has been the absolute beast of the ICC tournaments as the opponent team faced the heat of their brilliance, but the T20 World Cup 2026 has turned into a major heartbreak for them. After a disappointing campaign, the team is now set to undergo a complete review to reassess their performances.

Despite battling major injury setbacks, Australia struggled in every department, leaving the cricket world stunned by their collapse on the big stage. Reflecting on that, selector Tony Dodemaide urged for detailed scrutiny and looking forward to the upcoming edition of the T20 World Cup.

Cricket Australia ready to dissect failures after shocking T20 World Cup exit

In every ICC tournament, the cricket world takes a pause to watch Australia’s destruction, but the T20 World Cup 2026 was different from that. Even before stepping into the tournament, they faced injury blows as Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood remained out of the tournament.

As the tournament progressed, things only went from bad to worse, deepening their misery. Just not the consecutive injury hits, the sudden dip in their performance stunned the fans as the trademark Australian domination was a major miss. To make matters worse, they are now set to exit the tournament from the group stage.

Zimbabwe delivered their biggest heartbreak as Australia faced a 23-run defeat against them. After the disastrous performances, the team is set to face a massive shake-up. Australian selector Tony Dodemaide has confirmed that the players will face intense scrutiny once they return home from the tournament.

“It's really disappointing the way the tournament has rolled out. But we will need some time, and take some time, once we finish our last commitment – it's important that we finish strongly on Friday against Oman – then we'll get back and analyse it fully,” he said.

No room for emotion as Cricket Australia plan clear forensic review

After winning the ODI World Cup 2023, Australia’s struggle in the ICC tournament has been consistent struggle. Early exits in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy, followed by defeat in the ICC World Test Championship Final, have turned their golden run into a series of heartbreaks.

The international calendar is set to get busier, with the countdown already underway for the ODI World Cup 2027 next year. Soon after, another edition of the T20 World Cup will take center stage. Before that, Dodemaine called for a ‘forensic’ scrutiny as emotion will cut out for better results.

“We will do the requisite planning to look at 2028; we've got 2027 50-over World Cup in the meantime. All these things will be mapped out when we get time and space, and we can cut out the emotion of it and look at it more forensically,” he said.

Australia fight for respect with a positive finish in sight

Australia started the tournament with their well-known excellence as they registered a 67-run victory against Ireland. However, when expectations were high, they lost momentum and failed to deliver on the big stage. Before stepping into the last match, they registered only one victory in the last three matches.

As they are ending the 2026 campaign in the group stage, Australia will co-host the T20 World Cup 2028. Before they start preparation for the future, they are eyeing a positive finish in the ongoing edition. Reflecting on this, selector Tony Dodemaide said the team is eager to finish their upcoming clash against Oman with a win.

“We want to win every World Cup, no matter where it is. Clearly, the next one is at home. We'd love to do well at home. We've got a commitment within 48 hours or so against Oman, and we want to finish off really well,” he said.

On February 20, Australia will take their last shot at the T20 World Cup 2026 as they are set to face Oman in their last group stage clash. With Oman still searching for their first win, Australia will aim to dominate the game and end their disappointing campaign on a positive note
