After Stephen Fleming, Another CSK Veteran Applies For England Coaching Role

England cricket has gone through several major changes in recent times. As a result, the team is now looking to build a strong coaching structure for the future. Stephen Fleming has been appointed as England’s new head coach after Brendon McCullum stepped down from the Test coaching role. 

Interestingly, another former Chennai Super Kings veteran, Moeen Ali, has now expressed his desire to enter England’s coaching setup.

Notably, Fleming recently ended his 18-year association with Chennai Super Kings after guiding the franchise to five IPL titles. Moreover, the former New Zealand captain will now take charge of England. McCullum, meanwhile, has been relieved of his red-ball duties while continuing with the white-ball teams.

Moeen Ali Eyes England Coaching Role

Moeen Ali has made it clear that coaching England is one of his biggest dreams. However, the former all-rounder understands that he needs to gain experience before taking charge of the national team.

Speaking to the Press Association, Moeen revealed that he expects to have more time for coaching after the upcoming winter. Therefore, he is keen to work with England Lions, the Under-19 team or any other side where his services could be useful.

“I’ve been asked about doing Lions stuff quite often, but it’s been pretty difficult while I’m still playing. I think next year I’ll be a lot more available to do that,” Moeen said.

He added that he wants to gain experience and work hard before eventually targeting the biggest coaching job in English cricket.

Moeen Ali’s Strong CSK Connection With Stephen Fleming

Interestingly, Moeen shares a strong connection with Stephen Fleming. The two worked together at CSK, where Fleming was the head coach and Moeen represented the franchise for 4 seasons.

Therefore, their relationship could prove useful as Moeen begins his coaching journey. Stephen Fleming’s appointment as England head coach also gives Moeen an experienced figure to learn from as he moves towards his new career.

At the same time, Moeen knows that becoming England head coach will not happen overnight.

Moeen Ali Working Towards Coaching Qualifications

The former England star is already taking steps towards becoming a coach. Notably, he is currently working towards gaining his England and Wales Cricket Board Level Three qualification.

“The ultimate dream is to coach England, of course, but I know there is a lot of work to put in before that,” Moeen said.

Moeen’s Impressive England Career

Moeen retired from international cricket in 2024. However, the 39-year-old remains active in domestic and franchise cricket. The Birmingham-born left-handed batter and right-arm spinner represented England in 68 Tests, 138 ODIs and 92 T20Is. Notably, he made his international debut in 2014, while his final appearance came in June 2024.

Furthermore, Moeen has continued playing in domestic competitions. He currently represents Yorkshire in the T20 Blast and Southern Brave in The Hundred. 

Meanwhile, Moeen has already started preparing for his second career. Earlier this year, he mentored the England Lions in the UAE alongside former England teammate Andrew Flintoff. Therefore, while coaching England remains a long-term dream, Moeen is already taking the necessary steps.
