Afghanistan cricket is undergoing a major transformation as the Rashid Khan-led side recently parted ways with Jonathan Trott, who served as Afghanistan’s head coach from 2022 to 2026. Notably, the T20 World Cup 2026 marked Trott’s last event in Afghanistan’s dressing room, and it was an emotional departure for the coach and the players.
Under Trott, Afghanistan reached new heights, becoming the most improved side during the 2023 ODI World Cup and advancing to the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup after beating Australia. However, in the latest events, it was revealed that the Afghanistan Cricket Board’s (ACB) decision was to look for a new coach, not otherwise.
Now, the fans are miffed as to why the board broke something that didn’t need to be fixed. However, in the latest events, chief executive Naseeb Khan confirmed that the decision to release Trott was due to his unwillingness to shift his base to Afghanistan.
Afghanistan Set Massive Condition For New Head Coach
Notably, so far, Afghanistan do not have a home ground in their country. They play matches in the UAE and travel around the world. Hence, Trott hasn’t spent much time in Afghanistan. Therefore, the condition for the new coach is to set up his base in Afghanistan and look for local talents in the country to bring in talented players to the team.

We have stated in the contract (of the head coach and other overseas coaches) that their duty station will be Afghanistan. We want the national team coaches to closely observe our domestic cricket players. And when there are no series scheduled, they should work on improving the national team's weak points," said Naseeb.
The purpose behind this move is to have more focus on local talents and the head coach be present in the country to watch domestic games and pick up talents.
ACB Shortlists 2 Candidates For Head Coach Role
The Afghanistan Cricket Board has already begun shortlisting candidates for the head coach role. Notably, Naseem stated that they have narrowed the list down to two personalities - one South African and the other Asian, without revealing the details.
"They have shortlisted three coaches, and their interviews have also been conducted. We will announce the appointment of the new head coach before the Sri Lanka series once the hiring is finalised. Two of them are from South Africa, and one is Asian. We have not finalised the contracts with them yet, so mentioning their names would be premature," said Khan.
Notably, Afghanistan will play a white-ball series against Sri Lanka after the T20 World Cup 2026, which is when the new coach will join the team. Talking about Trott, he would be disappointed to not finish his Afghanistan tenure on a high, as the Rashid Khan-led side crashed out in the group-stage after two defeats against New Zealand and South Africa.
