Bangladesh hit by a match fixing row [Source: AP]
Bangladesh Cricket has been through some turmoil over the past several months, with problems racking up from every direction. It all started with political and public unrest in the country, leading to a power struggle between the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the BCCI and Mustafizur Rahman’s subsequent removal from IPL 2026.
The BCB went on to withdraw from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, alongside players’ open protest against the board, before the inaugural WBPL failed to find sponsors and got postponed.
However, this time around, things have spiralled in an unwanted direction as the integrity of the sport in the nation finds itself under threat. Several players have been found guilty of career-ending charges amidst BCB’s efforts to rebuild from the recent setbacks.
7 players banned as match-fixing hits Bangladesh cricket
The incident happened during the recent CJKS Talent Cup 2026 under the nose of the local sports committee, Chattogram Jila Krira Sangshta.
On April 3, as the Bakalia Ekadosh faced the Crescent Club in the T20 tournament, seven Bakalia Ekadosh players were found guilty of charges of match-fixing. As per the investigation, they were deemed to have committed a gross violation of the spirit of cricket.
The players — Sakib Hossain, Obaidul Alam, Omar Faruk, Tin Dhar, Mahir Anwar, Mohammad Iqbal and Nazmul Islam — found themselves under investigation after a bizarre sequence of play in the match. The players deliberately got themselves hit out in the match, which caught the attention of the authorities, who took swift action.
Alongside the players, coach Aminul Haque also found himself in the firing line of the authorities after the incident, facing the strictest disciplinary action. Haque is now banned from all cricketing activities for the next five years.
Furthermore, the CJKS has officially reached out to the BCB to uphold all these bans in all domestic leagues across the nation and show zero tolerance for match manipulation in Chittagong.

Recent match-fixing scandal in the BPL
In the aftermath of the recent Bangladesh Premier League season, it was learned that Mukhlesur Rahman Shamim, the Director of BCB (Rajshahi Division), was allegedly involved in several match-fixing-related discussions in BPL.
A local journalist had published an investigative video, where Shamim was reported to be organising meetings with spotters in a Sylhet hotel. Two people involved with the franchise, Noakhali Express, were also said to be involved in match-fixing.
This has been a recurring thing around the Bangladesh cricket board, tainting the board’s reputation in the world. Earlier in BPL 2025, 10 cricketers, including six national team players and two overseas names, also caught the attention of the Anti-Corruption Unit for involvement in fixing in 8 different BPL 2025 matches.
Bangladesh cricket looks to start afresh
Following a long list of unfortunate events involving the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Bangladesh’s on-field performances have also taken a bit of a hit. Currently, they sit 8th on the World Test Championship Table for the 2025-27 cycle, with ODI games in the lead-up to the World Cup 2027 being few and far between.
Nonetheless, after the recent ODI series win against Pakistan, the Bangladesh team will look to bounce back with a big series against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa scheduled in the next 12 months.
Additionally, they are planning the inaugural WBPL season, where they have openly invited the Indian Women stars to potentially repair their relations with the Indian board, which remains instrumental for their survival in the cricketing world.
