Sri Lanka cricket is back in the news, but this time, for all the wrong reasons. Two of the state’s U19 cricketers were reportedly arrested in a disturbing incident, leading to serious controversy.
The U19 cricketers in question were reportedly staying at a hotel in Colombo, where they were accused of a privacy breach, and given the severity of the accusations, police had to be involved.
Sri Lanka cricketers accused of filming women
According to ESPN Cricinfo, the incident took place in a hotel in Narahenpita, where women guests complained that they were being secretly filmed while bathing.
Acting on these complaints, local police detained the two Sri Lanka U19 cricketers and launched an investigation. Authorities are now also examining whether any of the alleged footage was shared online, which could escalate the severity of the case.
The players were later produced before the Aluthkade Magistrate's Court and released on personal bail of LKR 500,000 each. The case is set to be heard again on May 25, with further legal proceedings expected as the investigation develops.
So far, Sri Lanka Cricket has not announced any internal disciplinary action. But if proven, the allegations could have serious legal and career consequences for the players.

Sri Lanka Cricket is in big turmoil
Times are tough for Sri Lanka Cricket these days. The government has apparently taken control of the board operations and will now be handled by the Ministry of Sports instead of the elected SLC officials.
This happened due to long-standing allegations of corruption, mismanagement, and poor governance in SLC. Things escalated to the point where the entire leadership, including President Shammi Silva, resigned.
Hence, the government stepped in to prevent further instability and to reset the system through reforms. A reform committee has been appointed which includes several high profile individuals, including former legend Kumar Sangakkara.
Will SLC be banned by ICC for government interference?
However, the move from the government to shape up Sri Lanka Cricket board will come at its own risk. For context, the ICC has strict rules against government interference in cricket boards.
In fact, Sri Lanka was already suspended briefly in 2023-24 for a similar issue. If the ICC feels this takeover crosses the line, Sri Lanka could face sanctions again, including possible suspension from international cricket.
This could be devastating for Sri Lanka Cricket, as they are already struggling to stay relevant in the ICC tournaments against big teams.
For now, SLC will be run by the state government until the board finds a solution. But whatever solution exists has to be implemented as soon as possible before ICC escalates the situation.
That being said, Sri Lanka will be back in action with white-ball away series against West Indies will begin in June.
