One of the most honourable awards in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the “Man of the Tournament”, now the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, given to the top performer of the season. Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has honoured top performers with the award.
Notable MVP winners include multiple-time recipients such as Shane Watson, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell, along with stellar seasons from Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill.
Unlike the Orange Cap or Purple Cap, which are simply awarded for scoring the most runs or taking the most wickets, the MVP is determined by a points-based system. A player earns points for every game-changing moment across all departments of the game:
- Batting: 2.5 points per four, 3.5 points per six.
- Bowling: 3.5 points per wicket, 1 point per dot ball.
- Fielding: 2.5 points per catch or stumping.
It is worth noting that the IPL governing body, BCCI, officially renamed the Man of the Tournament award to the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Indian Premier League. The prestigious award reflects a data-driven, comprehensive points system across all facets of the game.

“I have learned about batting under pressure this season, how to adapt my game according to the situation this season. You can’t play every game the same way, you have to read the situation and play accordingly especially in the Playoffs,” Sooryavanshi told broadcasters after winning the award.
Sooryavanshi was followed by the IPL 2026 Purple Cap winner, Gujarat Titans pacer Kagiso Rabada, who finished second with a score of 408 points from 17 matches, for his 23 wickets and five catches. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Sunil Narine, who has won the award for the most number of times (3), finished 19th on the list this season.
