The highly anticipated India tour of New Zealand is set to begin on Thursday, October 22, with the first match of the five-match T20I series. The day-night series opener will be played at Hagley Oval in Christchurch at 12:30 PM (IST).

Shreyas Iyer and co. are coming off a well-fought series tie against West Indies at home, wherein Bhuvneshwar Kumar also made his much-awaited return to the Indian team. On the other hand, the Kiwis took a short break since their five-match ODI series against West Indies in July.

So, as the all-format tour begins in Christchurch, here's a look at the player battles to watch out for within the game.

In a captain-against-captain battle, Shreyas Iyer will go head-to-head against Mitchell Santner in the middle overs. Since Iyer's return to the T20I side, he hasn't faced Santner yet; however, previously the New Zealand spinner has kept Iyer in check, with only 41 runs in 40 balls and a dismissal to his name.

As a left-arm finger spinner, the Kiwi bowler also has an edge, considering the angles against a RHB. He has only conceded 7.75 runs per over this year in 15 innings, picking 15 wickets. On the other hand, Iyer has a reputation for being a good spin batter, making it an interesting battle.

New Zealand's swashbuckling opener Finn Allen has not faced much of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but in the only three-ball face-off, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has gotten the better of him. The in-form Allen has 3 runs in 3 balls, getting out once against the Indian veteran.

Additionally, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has 33 RHB dismissals inside T20I powerplays, conceding only 5.87 runs per over in this phase of play against them.

Abhishek Sharma went head-to-head against Jacob Duffy earlier in 2026. In the series in India, Abhishek completely dominated the proceedings with a whopping 81 runs in just 31 balls. As he struck at 261.30, Abhishek scored 11 fours and 5 sixes against Duffy.

The Blackcaps dismissed the batter once, and he was also among the best New Zealand bowlers last year, followed by a good IPL season. Their collision in the powerplay will be one to watch out for.

4. Daryl Mitchell vs Axar Patel

Daryl Mitchell was one of the stars of New Zealand's tour of India earlier in the year, where he picked Kuldeep Yadav very well. However, whenever he has faced Axar Patel in T20Is, the scoring rate has been under control.

In 15 balls, Mitchell has scored 17 runs off Axar, while being dismissed twice. Axar will operate in the powerplay, but an over or two of his spell can be kept to be used against Mitchell in the second half of the innings.
