The Australian cricket team is on the verge of a crushing defeat against South Africa in their second Test of the three-match series in Gqeberha. After allowing the Proteas to soar to 425-9d from 40-4, the visiting batters came up short against Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada’s pace rampage on Day 4.

Notably, such was Australia’s batting collapse in their first innings that they handed South Africa an opportunity to enforce a follow-on. Following Australia’s debacle at the St George's Park in Gqeberha, here is a look at all instances of Australia being asked to follow on in Test cricket since the year 2000.

How many times has Australia followed on in 21st century Tests?

The latest incident marked Australia’s only third follow on in Test cricket since the year 2000. In the 26 years that have gone by in the 21st century, the Australians have been forced to follow on only twice previously, highlighting just how rare such a situation has been for one of Test cricket’s most dominant sides.

The first of those instances occurred during the fourth Test of the historic 2005 Ashes series in England. Batting second at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, Ricky Ponting’s pantheons folded up for just 218 in response to England’s 477.

England captain Michael Vaughan fittingly asked Australia to follow on, and the hosts went on to win the match by three wickets.
