Just ahead of the India vs New Zealand T20I series, the Men in Blue captain Shreyas Iyer has made it clear that there is no immediate place for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the Playing XI.

Despite proving his worth as an opener, Iyer has prioritised the fact that as the senior players are scoring consistently, Sooryavanshi cannot break in right now and will have to wait for the right opportunities to make his mark again.

Shreyas Iyer wants Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to be patient

So far, Sooryavanshi has played only 8 games out of the 21 T20Is India has played since the 15-year-old’s debut. Shreyas Iyer, speaking ahead of the India vs New Zealand series, made it clear that although a talent like him should be preserved, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are scoring consistently, which is making it difficult for Vaibhav to make a place as an opener.

"It's important that a talent like him (Sooryavanshi) should always be happy around the dressing room," Iyer said.

"He is very young, he has more years to get opportunities. It's not like he can walk in right now, because our openers are scoring consistently, and they have won the World Cup," Iyer added.

Abhishek scored 149 runs at an average of 29.00 in the West Indies series while Samson bagged 168 runs at an average of 33.6. The top scorer for India in the series, though, was Shreyas Iyer himself with 181 runs at an average of 45.25.

Iyer sends message to Sooryavanshi

Iyer, later also revealed that he had often advised Sooryavanshi to stay patient and rely on his preparation instead of getting frustrated over limited playing opportunities.

"I just keep telling him you will get the opportunity, if you be consistent about your processes, you have to wait sometimes, we have got two fantastic openers, that's the conversation we have been having with Vaibhav," Iyer said after the fifth T20I against the West Indies was washed out.

In his last appearance, Sooryavanshi scored 38 and 15 runs in the Asian Games 2026. Ahead of that, in the Zimbabwe series, Vaibhav shone with an average of 50.33 and bagged two half-centuries from the 3 T20Is he played.
