In a move which could turn the heads of many, Hardik Pandya could join Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a mega trade deal which could bring Yashasvi Jaiswal to his native state’s IPL team. The trade deal, as things stand, could happen as early as before the start of the next IPL season.
While some might feel this could be a blockbuster success for Rajasthan Royals if they pull off the deal, in hindsight, it would only create major headaches in the times to come.
How? In this article, let’s take a closer look at how the Hardik Pandya trade could negatively impact Rajasthan Royals.
The Captaincy Conundrum
Ever since Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians (MI) after a successful Gujarat Titans stint, his captaincy has often become the talk of the town, particularly because MI picked him a little bit early to replace Rohit Sharma, presumably to see more success after just three dry years without championships.
Moreover, with Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah being there for Mumbai Indians, things only became more difficult for Hardik on the field.

Very similarly, Rajasthan Royals made Riyan Parag captain just before IPL 2026, replacing Sanju Samson, who joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Now, keeping in mind that Parag took his side to the IPL playoffs in his full-time IPL captaincy debut, it would be harsh on him if they snatch the leadership from him after just one season.
| Criterion | Hardik Pandya | Riyan Parag |
| Matches | 70 | 22 |
| Win | 37 | 10 |
| Loss | 33 | 12 |
| Win % | 52.85 | 45.45 |

On the other hand, being someone who helped a franchise win the IPL title as captain on his debut, coupled with being a name to lead India in T20Is, makes it very difficult to convince Hardik to join RR without captaincy assurance.
The matter is otherwise if he himself no longer wants to lead, as with Rishabh Pant.
Messing With A Promising Opening Pair
T20 cricket is mainly about a strong top order, coupled with a very versatile, yet wicket-taking bowling attack. Over the years, teams that have got the most things right in these categories end up winning the IPL titles.
In Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rajasthan Royals have had one of the best opening pairs across all the teams. While Sooryavanshi had the dream start, it was Jaiswal who started complementing the kid in IPL 2025 before he became the global sensation in the following year.
- Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the quickest Indian pair to score 500 runs as openers in terms of balls faced (248). They broke the record of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, who took 309 balls to get there.
Yes, Jaiswal might not have had a great IPL 2026 with the bat in hand, but you can’t just write off someone who has the potential to become one of India's very few three-format batters for the future. Not to forget, he is just 24 years old.
Hardik, on the other hand, is already 32 years old. Even though he can bat at No. 3 or No. 4, having Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel in the mix won’t allow him to bat at the top of the order. Therefore, the Hardik Pandya trade does make little sense from RR’s perspective.
The Never Ending Hardik Pandya Injury Battle
Probably the most significant reason the Hardik Pandya trade to RR might backfire is his prolonged injury woes. Even recently, he suffered a leg strain, which ruled him out of the India vs Afghanistan ODIs.
During IPL 2026, Hardik Pandya was troubled by back spasms, which limited him to playing only 10 of 14 matches. Not to forget, he had a left ankle injury during the 2023 World Cup and has had many minor injury setbacks in between.
Therefore, bringing a heavyweight name who has also suffered many injury setbacks lately can be troublesome for Rajasthan Royals.
The obvious reason for the Hardik Pandya trade is winning the IPL title, something they have not done since the inaugural edition, when they won it under the legendary Shane Warne. However, logically, the Hardik Pandya RR trade won’t help him repeat the same with all factors explained.
