Rashid Khan Arman was born in Nangarhar, eastern Afghanistan, into a Shinwari Pashtun family. He grew up in Jalalabad alongside ten siblings in a household deeply affected by the realities of conflict in the region. Due to the Afghan war, Rashid’s family was forced to flee to Pakistan, where he spent part of his childhood— a period that played a crucial role in shaping both his character and cricketing ambitions.

Rashid developed his love for cricket by playing street matches with his brothers. He idolised Shahid Afridi, after whom he modelled aspects of his bowling action, while also drawing inspiration from AB de Villiers for his batting. Interestingly, Rashid initially saw himself more as a batter before leg-spin became his primary weapon.

He studied computer science at Islamia College, Peshawar, gaining admission through his sporting talent. His performances during Afghanistan’s tour of Pakistan in 2014 brought him into the spotlight, marking the beginning of an extraordinary international journey.

Rashid Khan’s Domestic Career

Rashid Khan made his first-class debut in December 2016 against the England Lions in Abu Dhabi and delivered an all-round performance, claiming 12 wickets in the match, while also contributing valuable runs. Even at that early stage, his ability to dominate high-quality opposition stood out.

Rashid Khan made his Test debut for Afghanistan against India in June 2018, as part of the nation’s historic first-ever Test match. While the debut proved challenging, it marked a significant milestone for both player and country.

His defining red-ball moment came in September 2019, when he captained Afghanistan against Bangladesh, becoming the youngest Test captain in cricket history. In that match, Rashid delivered a dream performance — taking a ten-wicket haul and scoring a fifty — leading Afghanistan to a famous victory and registering the country’s first Test five-wicket haul by a bowler.

Though his Test appearances have been limited, Rashid Khan’s impact in red-ball cricket has been historic, particularly in Afghanistan’s formative years as a Test-playing nation.

Rashid Khan’s ODI Career

Rashid Khan made his ODI debut for Afghanistan against Zimbabwe in October 2015, marking the start of one of the fastest rises by a bowler in 50-over cricket. His impact was immediate and extraordinary.

In June 2017, Rashid produced a spell that announced Afghanistan’s arrival on the global stage, taking 7 for 18 against the West Indies — the best ODI bowling figures by an Associate nation player at the time. During the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, he became the fastest and youngest bowler to reach 100 ODI wickets, achieving the milestone in just 44 matches, breaking Mitchell Starc’s long-standing record.

Rashid also made history as a leader in the format, becoming the youngest cricketer to captain an international side when he led Afghanistan in an ODI at just 19 years. Rashid Khan made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in October 2015, and it was in this format that he truly became a global phenomenon. In March 2017, he delivered one of the greatest spells in T20I history, taking 5 for 3 against Ireland, including becoming the first player to claim a five-wicket haul in just two overs.

He went on to become the fastest bowler to reach 50 and 100 T20I wickets, and in September 2025, surpassed Tim Southee to become the highest wicket-taker in Men’s T20I cricket. His consistency, variations, and tactical awareness have made him virtually indispensable in Afghanistan’s T20I setup.

Rashid Khan has been one of the most influential overseas players in the history of the Indian Premier League, building a reputation for consistency, control, and match-winning impact since his debut in 2017. Across franchises and seasons, Rashid’s IPL journey mirrors his global stature — calm under pressure, ruthless with the ball, and increasingly valuable with the bat.

Rashid Khan made his IPL debut in 2017 after being signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 4 crore, becoming one of the first Afghan players to feature in the league. He made an immediate impression in his maiden season, finishing as the sixth-highest wicket-taker and quickly establishing himself as a bowler captains could rely on in any phase of the innings.

Between 2017 and 2021, Rashid was a cornerstone of the SRH bowling attack. Over five seasons, he picked up 93 wickets at a remarkable economy rate of 6.33, consistently choking opposition middle orders while also delivering breakthroughs. His ability to bowl flat, fast leg-spin on Indian surfaces made him one of the most difficult bowlers to line up, regardless of conditions.

Ahead of the IPL 2022 season, Rashid Khan joined the newly formed the Gujarat Titans, marking a fresh chapter in his IPL career. The move proved instantly successful. In the franchise’s debut season, Rashid played a vital role in Gujarat’s title-winning campaign, finishing with 19 wickets and contributing valuable runs in the lower order when required.

Beyond the numbers, Rashid’s experience and calm presence played a key role in shaping the Gujarat Titans’ identity as a disciplined, tactically sharp side in their very first year.

The 2023 IPL season marked the peak of Rashid Khan’s IPL career. He enjoyed his most productive campaign, claiming 27 wickets, and delivered one of the standout performances in Gujarat Titans’ history by taking the franchise’s first-ever IPL hat-trick, against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Rashid Khan remains a central figure in the Gujarat Titans setup and was retained by the franchise for the 2026 IPL season, reflecting continued faith in his ability and experience.
