Kirk Mckenzie is another bright prospect who has emerged from the Under-19 World Cup for the West Indies. Just like Chris Gayle, Mckenzie is a left-handed top-order batter, a virtuoso and from the land of Jamaica. The youngster made the limelight during the 2020 World Cup when he batted brilliantly for 99, despite having an injured leg.
The Jamaican donned the West Indian colours during the 2020 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, where he showed some fighting spirit. Struggling with an injured leg that was enabling him to barely stand, Mckenzie batted brilliantly but fell just one run shy of a hundred against New Zealand Under-19. Later, the left-hander was carried off the field by the Kiwi boys.
The Jamaican was the third-highest run-scorer for the West Indies in the tournament with a total of 152 runs from five innings. The following year, the southpaw was named in the Jamaica Tallawahs squad for the Caribbean Premier League 2021.
In CPL, the youngster will be spending a month or so with the likes of Andre Russell, Fidel Edwards, Carlos Braithwaite and many others; which would help him to graduate to the next level.
