More action coming your way in the Caribbean Premier League as the Tridents host the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the last league fixture tomorrow at 4:30 AM IST (7 PM Local Time, today).
Barbados Tridents may have won the game by 2 wickets in the final over but both Tridents and Jamaica Kingsmen ensure qualification in the playoffs! A win-win for both the sides who will face each other in the eliminator.
Chris Green (Barbados Tridents Captain): [on his feelings] "I am tired. It's way too late.
[on staying in the game] We had a lot of depth down till Motie. What a game that he had. Stepped up amazingly with the ball. He bowled one over short and I can't sleep over it but he stepped up with the bat and showed what a key player he is for the side. Credit to Motie for the win.
[on Descarte] He's been brilliant since he's come in with both bat and ball. Career best score in the CPL and he's showing his flexibility. He's been used in the past down the order and we've used him now up the order and he's grabbed that opportunity with both hands. In tournament cricket you need different players stepping up in the back end and fortunately we've got different players now putting their hands up which is so important.
[on room for improvement] I still don't think we've played our best cricket. Our bowling performance here at home's been really consistent to win thrice and secure qualification. There's a good opportunity tomorrow to keep learning and apply that blueprint because finals are here and we're playing on Wednesday. We'll be playing Guyana in what feels like a few hours' time. We need to rest, recuperate and keep growing & learning.
[on the crowd] Incredible. Really grateful for everyone who stayed behind. It's really late but that support at the back end, we really felt it and we wanted to try and capture the 12th man of Barbados for that term and we really feel like the support tonight was right behind us so it's been fantastic. We're very grateful for it and we can't wait to see everyone turn out today against Guyana and then Wednesday in the finals as we push on to try and make it all the way."
Rovman Powell (Jamaica Kingsmen Captain): "[Qualified for the playoffs, how does it feel?] Yeah, definitely. That was our first objective. We have three goals, you know, once you can qualify for the playoffs and when it comes to playoff time, we see our best and push into the finals and then, when it goes into the final, you see what happens there.
[The moment where Kingsmen lost the game?] I think it is a case of small margins. You know we kind of threw away the game in a sense where our fielding kind of let us down. We misfield a few balls on the outfield. We thought 150 was a good score on that surface at the halfway mark. We were happy but I think it is a valiant bowling effort.
[On playing at Kensington Oval] It is always nice to play at Kensington. Barbados is like my second home. I have played a lot of cricket here, I have captained their franchise for the last three years. I have very good memories. It is good that the cricket is back at Kensington and hopefully my team can find some wins in the coming days.
[How to manage bowling options] I think it is a case of trying to control different areas. After making a 150, you try and see if you can control the powerplay that's objective one. A lot of the times the middle overs take care of themselves. I try to bring in my most experienced bowlers, Russell and Hunain to see if they can push the game as deep as possible. You know with 17-20 in the last over, maybe we should've won, but these things happen.
[On losing 2 close games to Tridents and playing them in the Eliminator] Both games went down to the very last ball, very last over. As they say, small margins. So if we can control our anxiety a bit more when those winning moments come, it is for us to take them. Both games, if we look on it, we obviously threw away both games."
Gudakesh Motie (POTM): "[On last over and how he controlled his emotions] Well, first of all. I want to say it was an all-round performance by my team. In the last over, a message was sent out by the coaches for me to face all six deliveries. My plan was clear, I was just looking for early boundaries in the over which I did get so I am really happy with it.
[Is he an all-rounder now] I have been doing a lot of work on my batting and I am happy it is paying off now.
[Playing in front of passionate crowd] I would say I was really excited in the beginning. I am feeling happy, we knew how important this game was and I want to thank the crowd for coming out every game, every day to support us.
[Plan on that surface] We started a little earlier and it did help the spinners. I was just trying to hold my lengths and not bowl too fast. Because when I bowl too fast, the batters can line me up.
[Can he repeat this performance against his former team in less than 20 hours?] I will try my best (chuckles)."
Player of the Match: Gudakesh Motie
10:27 AM IST, 12:57 AM Local Time: The Barbados Tridents clinch a last-ball thriller by 2 wickets against the Jamaica Kingsmen to qualify for the playoffs!
