Manav Suthar for India [Source: BCCI]
Manav Suthar became India’s 319th men’s Test cricketer on June 6, 2026, when he took the field against Afghanistan. A left-arm orthodox spinner and handy lower-order batter, Suthar’s debut came after a long toil on domestic pitches.
Manav Jagdusakumar Suthar was born on August 3, 2002, in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan and his childhood was defined by repetition and hard work.
He captained Sri Ganganagar’s district side to Under-14 and Under-16 titles and then moved systematically through Rajasthan’s Under-16, Under-19, and Under-23 teams.
Domestic First-Class Rise with Rajasthan
Suthar made his first-class debut for Rajasthan on February 17, 2022, against Andhra Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy. In the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy, he finished as Rajasthan’s highest wicket-taker with 39 wickets in just six matches at an average of 20.33.
Across his first eight first-class appearances, he collected 44 wickets, an extraordinary return for a spinner still learning his trade.
His overall first-class numbers back up the early promise. In 29 matches he has taken 129 wickets at 25.76, with a frugal economy rate of 2.94 runs per over. He has already recorded six five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket match hauls, with a best innings return of 8 for 33.
With the bat, Suthar offers more than just a long tail. He has scored one century, a 120 against Himachal Pradesh, and six half-centuries, averaging 25.54 from 48 innings.
That all-round ability gave his name extra weight when selectors began looking for a lower-order contributor who could hold an end with the ball.

IPL Exposure and Gujarat Titans Stint
Suthar’s introduction to top-flight white-ball cricket came through the Indian Premier League. He first linked up with the Gujarat Titans as a net bowler in 2023, using the opportunity to watch international stars and refine his approach. The franchise eventually signed him, and he made his IPL debut in 2024 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Gujarat Titans saw enough long-term value to retain Manav Suthar for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. In IPL 2026, he played three matches and took two wickets at an economy of 11.33.
While those numbers are modest, the franchise and Indian team management view his T20 exposure as a learning platform.
Why Manav Suthar Got a Place for India?
Suthar’s call-up for the one-off Test against Afghanistan was a carefully plotted move by India’s team management. The primary reason is tactical; India wanted to field three spin options on a surface expected to turn and fill the Ravindra Jadeja gap.
Suthar, as a classical flight-and-loop spinner who rarely leaks runs, fit that brief exactly. His selection also addressed a longer-term gap. Before Suthar, no Rajasthan cricketer had been picked for India’s Test squad in 12 years.
The selectors’ confidence was built on a string of eye-catching performances for India A. In the 2023 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, Suthar finished as the tournament’s joint second-highest wicket-taker with 10 scalps.
He then produced a match-winning 7 for 49 in the Duleep Trophy and a five-wicket haul against Australia A in 2025. Those outings proved he could trouble high-quality batters in multi-day cricket.
The Test Debut and Cap Number 319
The actual call came in May 2026 when the squad was announced for the Afghanistan Test starting June 6. Suthar became the 319th man to wear India’s Test cap, marking a milestone that was both personal and a reward for the unglamorous grind of Ranji Trophy cricket.
Early signs suggest India has found a reliable red-ball workhorse. At 23, Suthar has years ahead to develop variations and add more bite to his action, but the core package is already in place.
