BCCI Gives Final Verdict On Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future

Speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's future in international cricket has dominated headlines in recent weeks. Several reports claimed that IND vs ENG ODI series could mark the former Indian captain's final appearance in international cricket.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has firmly dismissed those claims. Earlier, BCCI president Devajit Saikia rejected the retirement rumours, clarifying that the Lord's ODI was not Rohit Sharma's final match for India. 

Now, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has also backed the veteran batter, stating that there is no discussion whatsoever regarding his retirement.

Rajeev Shukla Rejects Retirement Rumours

Speaking to reporters, Rajeev Shukla dismissed all the speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's future.  According to him, the reports circulating in the media and on social media have no basis, and there is currently no question of the former Indian captain retiring from international cricket.

"Rohit Sharma is a part of our team and is continuing to play. The things being circulated in the media and on social media have no meaning. As of now, there is no question of his retirement," Shukla said.

Furthermore, Shukla also made it clear that there is no need for any major changes while the team continues to perform well.

"Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the decision on who stays in the team and who does not rests with the selectors. The Indian team is performing well and winning matches, so there is no need for any changes at present," he added.

Rohit Sharma Answered Critics With A Record-Breaking Century At Lord’s

Before the 3rd ODI against England, retirement rumours were at their peak. However, Rohit Sharma responded in the best possible manner, with his bat.

The former Indian skipper smashed a magnificent 138 runs off 110 deliveries at Lord's. As a result, he became the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at the iconic venue. 

Additionally, the century came at a crucial stage of his career. Rohit has repeatedly stated that he wants to continue representing India and is determined to earn a place in the squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

After his memorable century, Rohit Sharma once again brushed aside all the discussions regarding his future. Instead, he emphasized that his only responsibility is to perform for India whenever he gets the opportunity.

"My job is with the bat. Come and play, represent my country, represent my team. That's what I have been told to do since my debut, so that's what I am going to do," Rohit told BCCI.tv.

Rohit Sharma Set To Return Against West Indies After Tough UK Tour

Although Rohit's brilliant century at Lord's was one of the biggest positives of the tour, India eventually lost the ODI series against England 2-1. Earlier, the Men in Blue also suffered a 2-0 ODI series defeat against Ireland and later lost the T20I series against England 4-0, making it a disappointing tour overall.

Nevertheless, Rohit Sharma is expected to open the innings alongside Shubman Gill in India's upcoming home ODI series against West Indies, which begins on September 27, as the team starts its preparations for 2027 ODI World Cup.
