There is still plenty of time to confirm India’s World Cup 2027 squad, but discussions over whether Rohit Sharma will make it have been ongoing for a while. A recent development has now emerged on Wednesday, and it is the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that is currently in disagreement regarding the subject among selectors and the top brass.
According to Dainik Jagran, the situation has lately worsened due to the fact that the BCCI and Rohit Sharma had a formal discussion regarding his selection for India’s World Cup 2027 squad.
The BCCI team management did not want Rohit to be seen at the upcoming 50-over event, and some of the individuals had conveyed this to him during the recent India tour of England.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, out of nowhere, addressed the media about Rohit Sharma, saying he can continue playing as long as he wants. Now, the Dainik Jagran report revealed that Saikia’s comment came without any discussion with other BCCI board members.
Ajit Agarkar’s Tenure Holds The Key For Rohit Sharma
A recent speculation emerged that Ajit Agarkar, the current BCCI chief selector, will be replaced soon. Agarkar’s tenure ends in September 2026, that too after a three-month extension period from the BCCI.
The Dainik Jagran report hinted that Agarkar might get another year's extension in his role if India’s upcoming two-match Test series in Sri Lanka ends on a positive note. If not, VVS Laxman, in all likelihood, will replace Agarkar.

Regardless of whether Laxman, the head of the Centre of Excellence in Cricket, will succeed Agarkar or not, the decision regarding Rohit Sharma in India’s World Cup 2027 squad will be decided at the BCCI's Annual General Meeting in September.
When Did Agarkar Become BCCI's Chief Selector?
Agarkar became BCCI’s chief selector in July 2023. Under his watch, India won the T20 World Cup 2024 and the T20 World Cup 2026, and won the Champions Trophy 2025.
Nevertheless, India have had a very mixed bilateral series in Agarkar’s tenure. To make matters worse, a few recent selections have resulted in them performing very poorly across formats, bringing his position under scrutiny again. However, there is still no guarantee on whether he would have a final say regarding India’s World Cup 2027 squad.
Who Can BCCI Replace Rohit Sharma In India's World Cup 2027 Squad?
If BCCI does not keep Rohit Sharma in India’s World Cup 2027 squad, there are several others who can get his place. To begin with, Ishan Kishan can directly play at the top, while Yashasvi Jaiswal has been waiting in the wings as well.
World Cup 2027 will primarily be held in South Africa, along with Namibia and Zimbabwe. The 50-over format will begin on October 4 and will run till November 21 next year.
