Kevin Pietersen Captaincy And Mentoring Record As England Call Up Arrives

Former captain Kevin Pietersen will join the England men's white-ball teams as a Specialist Mentor ahead of next year's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Pietersen will join Brendon McCullum's white-ball coaching setup for England's upcoming Vitality T20I and Metro Bank ODI series against Sri Lanka later this month. Pietersen will also be involved in England's white-ball tours of Australia and South Africa this winter.

Pietersen played 136 ODIs and 37 T20Is for England, scoring 5,616 runs. He also scored 8,181 runs in 104 Test matches.

However, his career ended controversially in 2014 in the aftermath of the 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Australia, amid tensions within the dressing room and between the batter and team management after the ‘Textgate’ scandal.

Pietersen was the team’s top scorer in the series and, despite remaining keen to play for England, was told he was no longer part of the plans, bringing an acrimonious end to his international career.

For England, this is the first step in reshaping the backroom teams in the new era of split coaches. It is also not the first time they have hired a big name to act as a consultant to the white-ball side, following Andrew Flintoff and Kieron Pollard.

Perhaps the greatest white-ball batter to play for England, he brings knowledge and experience to the coaching staff.

On top of that, the South Africa-born player’s upbringing could prove particularly valuable as England prepares for next year’s World Cup, starting in October 2027, co-hosted by South Africa.

As Kevin Pietersen returns to the English set-up, this time as a ‘Specialist Mentor’, let’s take a look at his background as a mentor and his captaincy records.

Kevin Pietersen's captaincy record

Kevin Pietersen was named England’s Test and One-Day captain on 04 August, 2008. The then 28-year-old took over after Michael Vaughan and Paul Collingwood stood down from their respective positions the previous day.

Pietersen had to take the charge in the middle of a Test series against South Africa, as one of the only players who was guaranteed a place in both red and white-ball squads.

The South Africa-born streak as the skipper began promisingly with a six-wicket win at The Oval, scoring a hundred and picking up both the player of the match and player of the series awards.

In his first ODI series as full-time captain, England ran over South Africa 4-0, but the honeymoon period did not last for long as the team started to slide.

Pietersen led England for only three Tests and quit before he was forced out, just over five months after his appointment.

He resigned on the evening of January 7, 2009, with head coach Peter Moores sacked less than an hour later. The England and Wales Cricket Board admitted there had been an “irretrievable breakdown” in the relationship between the pair.

Kevin Pietersen's career as a mentor

While England Cricket has given a massive role to Pietersen, his coaching CV doesn't have much to boast other than his stint with Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025.

On 27 February 2025, Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) announced Kevin Pietersen’s appointment as their team mentor for IPL 2025.

The former England captain, at the time, linked up with and worked alongside a formidable Delhi Capitals support staff, which included Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao, Head Coach Hemang Badani, Assistant Coach Matthew Mott, and Bowling Coach Munaf Patel.

At the time of his appointment, Pietersen commented in great spirits, "I’ve got a great relationship with the owners and the Delhi Capitals fans, so when this idea came about, it was a very quick YES from me. It’s an exciting opportunity to step into this new role as a mentor for the Capitals”.

Under Pietersen's mentorship, DC began their IPL 2025 campaign with four consecutive wins. They lost just two matches in their first eight outings.  

However, the team suffered a series of losses, leading to a collapse in the second half of the tournament. In their last eight completed matches, they suffered six defeats and dramatically missed out on playoff qualification.
