In a groundbreaking update, former England captain Kevin Pietersen has joined as a mentor for the white-ball teams.
The 46-year-old batter, who represented the Three Lions in 104 Tests, 136 ODIs and 37 T20Is, racking up 13,767 international runs at 44.07, featuring 32 centuries and 67 half-centuries.
The attacking right-hander played an integral role during England's triumphs in the 2006 & 2010 Ashes, as well as their maiden T20 World Cup conquest in 2010.
Kevin Pietersen joins Brendon McCullum's England backroom staff
On Monday, the ECB announced Kevin Pietersen's hiring as the Specialist Mentor via a press release. The former English captain, who led in 15 matches, will join the Brendon McCullum-led coaching staff, which also features Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor.
Pietersen's maiden assignment with England will be the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, where the Harry Brook-led side will play three T20Is and as many ODIs at home, starting September 15. Moreover, he will remain with the team till the World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

"Former Ashes and T20 World Cup-winning batter Kevin Pietersen is to join England Men’s white ball teams as a Specialist Mentor in the build-up to next year’s ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in southern Africa," the ECB said in a press release.
"Having grown up in South Africa, Pietersen’s knowledge and understanding will particularly help the One Day International team as it prepares for next year’s World Cup which is being played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia."

Till IPL 2025, Kevin Pietersen was with the IPL franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) in the capacity of a team mentor. He worked closely with head coach Hemang Badani and Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao.
However, he called it quits with his position at the Capitals following just a one-year stint, citing ‘time commitment issues’.
During his time with DC as a mentor, he had lighthearted banter with KL Rahul, who called out the Englishman for having previously called his batting boring. Moreover, he came under scrutiny after he had a spontaneous trip to the Maldives mid-season.
Nevertheless, Pietersen’s handshake with the ECB would mean he won’t be able to join the IPL team for at least the 2027 season.

Although Kevin Pietersen is considered one of the sharpest cricketing minds of the modern era, the right-handed batter hasn’t had any previous experience of coaching, other than his stint with the DC.
That said, despite a brilliant start to the season, the Capitals finished fifth in IPL 2025 under Pietersen's mentorship.
His attacking mindset would sit brilliantly in the current setup, with Brendon McCullum and Harry Brook at the helm.

We have an incredibly talented white-ball squad, and I am excited to get in the trenches and work relentlessly hard with these players to maximise their potential. Meanwhile, England would look to draw on KP’s shrewdness after struggling in ICC events since lifting the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
