Kevin Pietersen and his fallout with England cricket (Source: AFP)Kevin Pietersen is set to make an extraordinary return to the England setup as a ‘specialist mentor’ for their white-ball teams ahead of the 2026 ODI World Cup, 12 years after his international playing career came to a controversial end.Pietersen’s role in the Brendon McCullum-led support staff unit will begin later this month. He will join his former England teammate Marcus Trescothick, alongside Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor, in McCullum's coaching staff.Notably, it was just over a decade ago that the England Cricket Board washed its hands of one of their greatest white-ball batter, with Andrew Strauss, the then England director of cricket, citing a “massive trust issue” between him and the ECB after he was dropped. As Kevin Pietersen prepares to return to the England Cricket Team, this time as ‘specialist mentor’, let’s take a look at exactly what had happened between him and England Cricket in the course of 18 months that led to his 12-year exile. The “Textgate” scandal: When England batter texted insults to opponents about his own captainIn 2012, Kevin Pietersen was accused of sending provocative texts to some of the South African players during their Test series in England. It was revealed that Pietersen had criticised a few of his teammates, the then-England skipper Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower, in a series of texts. He may also have revealed ways to get Strauss, who was playing his last Test for his country, out.For the unversed, the roots of this breakdown lay in a fundamental clash of personalities. Pietersen, an outspoken individualist, was operating in a team culture that had become rigidly conventional under Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss. Those text messages to the South African team, now known as the 2012 “Textgate” scandal, resulted in him being briefly dropped. On August 12, 2012, Kevin Pietersen was omitted from the England squad in the middle of the Test series against South Africa. The decision came the morning after he released a video admitting he had gone through a formal “reintegration” process to win back the ECB’s trust.“I want to commit to all for forms of cricket for England because I love playing for England," Pietersen said in the video.Watch the video here: No farewell series for one of England’s greatest white-ball batters, just an abrupt press releaseOne of England’s greatest white-ball batters, Kevin Pietersen, didn’t get a farewell tour. His international career ended with a blunt press release - the climax of a bitter feud. The England and Wales Cricket Board on 31 May, 2012 announced that Kevin Pietersen retired from all international limited-overs cricket with immediate effect. However, famously reversed his retirement in August the same year. Also read: Sourav Ganguly, Kevin Pietersen Inducted Into ICC Hall Of FameDespite the reversal, a turbulent period of contract disputes and outspoken comments at a news conference suggesting the final Test at Lord's could well be his last for England led to his dropping from the England team later that year. This eventually led to his permanent international exile after the 2013-14 Ashes.IPL sacrifices made me lose my career: Kevin PietersenIn April 2026, former England captain Kevin Pietersen revealed that his long-standing dispute with the England Cricket Board over his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) played a decisive role in cutting short his international career.Speaking on a podcast, Pietersen said the stand he took, prioritising franchise cricket at a time when it was frowned upon, came at a personal cost but ultimately helped pave the way for future players to balance international commitments with lucrative T20 leagues.Notably, in 2009, during the second season of the IPL, England allowed its contracted players to participate in franchise cricket for a limited three-week window. However, the South Africa-born England batter joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru, prioritising the league over his national duties. He was already reeling from a fallout with then-coach Peter Moores, which eventually extended to the ECB. From here, the complications grew further for Pietersen and his international career with England.Earlier, Pietersen, who spent IPL 2025 as Delhi Capitals’ mentor, publicly criticised Harry Brook, now England’s white-ball captain, for pulling out of his IPL contract before the season. In an interview, Pietersen said, “He (Brook) has a flaw playing spin in India, a real big flaw. Two months here, imagine what might have happened if he had fixed that?”That is now a conversation between a coach and his captain rather than a pundit and a player he has never worked with.Pietersen was also critical of the England set-up’s training standards on their tour of India in early 2025, a criticism McCullum dismissed at the time as factually incorrect. Both men have signed up to work together anyway.Kevin Pietersen’s 12-year-long exile from England cricket comes to an endPietersen’s England career ended in February 2014, after the 5-0 Ashes defeat in Australia, and the split was ugly. The then England captain had later revealed that Pietersen had been offered a white-ball advisory role and had said no.Twelve years later, he has essentially taken that job.The controversial end to Pietersen's international career never stopped him from being a hero to many players in their white-ball setup, including Brook, Tom Banton and Will Jacks. They will now have the chance to work closely with him over the next 15 months. Also read: Why Naman Dhir's 173 In Punjab T20 League Won't Be Counted In Official Records
