On Monday, September 7, South Africa named their 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia. The Proteas Men named a strong side, but Dewald Brevis took all the attention because his name was missing from the list.
The upcoming series will serve as a practice ground for the 2027 ODI World Cup, and Brevis’ exclusion hints that the T20I superstar might not be in the plan for the prestigious 50-over event set to be hosted by South Africa next year.
Similarly, this article will shed light on five T20I superstars who might not be part of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
1. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
India’s 15-year-old wonderkid made his India debut against England in the recently concluded UK tour. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi rose to prominence with a sensational IPL 2026. The youngster won the Orange Cap with a brilliant 776-run season.
It forced the selectors to pick the 15-year-old for T20Is. After waiting for a few matches, the youngster finally got to don the Indian jersey. There are murmurs of his inclusion in the ODI set-up, given Rohit Sharma is on the business end of his illustrious career.
In case the Hitman does hang his boots and make himself unavailable, then Yashasvi Jaiswal is ahead of Sooryavanshi in the pecking order. Therefore, Sooryavanshi, despite the interest, will not be part of India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
2. Tim David
Australia have a fairly balanced pool of players across the ODI and T20I formats. Most of the stars are common across formats. However, Tim David is one name that they cannot do without in T20Is, but is ignored in ODIs.
The right-handed batter is enjoying the best phase of his life as he has won two-straight IPL titles with RCB and is in huge demand when it comes to the shortest format of the game. However, the right-handed batter has not played a solitary ODI since 2023.

In his career, David has played just 4 ODIs. At present, Australia have a little problem with their lower middle-order because Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell have retired. Despite that, it seems unlikely that the selectors will turn to Tim David.
3. Phil Salt
Phil Salt is another amazing T20I superstar. Salt has not lost an IPL season since 2024. The right-handed batter is a regular in T20Is, but often ignored in the fifty-over format.
Salt is the 5th-best-ranked T20I batter in the world and has 1852 runs in 60 innings. However, in ODIs, England like to go ahead with the likes of Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell, leaving no space for Phil Salt.
Bethell is also in great form, and it seems unlikely for Salt to find his name in England’s 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup 2027.
4. Dewald Brevis
Dewald Brevis is having a great year in T20Is, having played 16 matches and scored 454 runs at an average of 34.92. In ODIs, the right-handed batter has not played a single fifty-over game in 2026, and his last ODI was against India on December 6, 2025.
He is part of the ODI squad to face Namibia, but the Proteas have named a second-string squad for that series. The Australia tour is more important, and the players part of that series are more guaranteed to have a place in the World Cup squad.
5. Noor Ahmad
Noor Ahmad is arguably Afghanistan’s best spinner after Rashid Khan. The left-arm spinner has a whopping 10 crore IPL contract with Chennai Super Kings and continues to be Men in Yellow’s frontline spinner.
However, Ahmad has struggled to impress Afghanistan selectors the same way he has Indian franchises. Talking about his Afghanistan career, Noor has played 12 T20Is in the last two years. In ODIs, Noor has played just 3 ODIs since 2025, and his last appearance was against India on February 28, 2025.
