The India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test in Galle was a landmark game for the Indian side, as it was their 600th Test match. Having played their first game way back in 1932, Team India has come a long way and has certainly become a force to reckon with in red-ball cricket.
India’s 600th Test was special as the Shubman Gill-led side crushed Sri Lanka to take a 1-0 lead in the series and keep their WTC final hopes alive. With India doing exceedingly well in their 600th game, we take a look at their Test results in every 100 Tests: 100, 200th, 300th, 400th, 500th, and 600th Tests.
1st vs England, Lord's, 1932 – England won by 158 runs
Team India played their very first Test match against England before independence in 1932, and the result certainly didn’t go in their way, as the hosts dominated the proceedings and thrashed India by 158 runs.
England posted 259 runs in their first innings, and India got bundled out for 189 runs. In reply, the hosts posted 275/8, and the visitors were knocked over for a paltry 187 as England crushed India in a one-sided contest.
100th vs England, Birmingham, 1967 – England won by 132 runs
35 years later, India played their landmark 100th Test against the same opposition, England, in Birmingham. Just like in 1932, the result remained the same as the hosts defeated the Indian team by 132 runs.
England posted 298 batting first, and India was expected to put up a fight on a spicy deck. However, the English bowlers dismantled the Indian batting as the Asian side got bundled out for just 92.
England were all out for 203 in their second innings as India needed 410 runs to win, and the team crumbled under pressure (277) and lost the one-sided match.
200th vs Pakistan, Lahore, 1982 – Drawn
India played their 200th Test match against their arch-rivals, Pakistan, in 1982, and the game was a drawn affair in Lahore.
Pakistan posted a massive 485 in their first innings, and India was put under pressure before the visitors responded with 389 in their first innings, courtesy of a brilliant century from Mohinder Amarnath. In reply, the hosts scored 135/1 in their second innings as the match was a drawn affair.
300th vs South Africa, Ahmedabad, 1996 – India won by 64 runs
14 years later, in 1996, Team India played their 300th Test match against South Africa in 1996 in Ahmedabad. The hosts scored 223 in their first innings, and in reply, South Africa were marginally ahead (244).

India were bundled out for 190 in their second innings, as the Proteas needed 170 runs to win, and the visitors crumbled as they got bundled out for just 105 and lost the match.
400th vs West Indies, Kingston, 2006 – India won by 49 runs
10 years later, India played their 400th Test match against the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.
On a tricky surface, India batted first and posted 200 runs, and in reply, the West Indian team struggled to put up a strong total and were all out for 103. India scored 171 in their second innings, and the Windies failed to attain a modest total of 269 as the team lost the game by 49 runs.
500th vs New Zealand, Kanpur, 2016 – India won by 197 runs
10 years earlier, India played their 500th Test match against the Kiwis at home in Kanpur, and the Indian side dominated the red-ball match. India scored 318 runs, and in reply, the Kiwis registered just 262 runs.
In their second innings, India posted 377/5, and the visitors were bundled out for a mere 236 as the hosts won the game by 197 runs.
600th Test vs Sri Lanka, Galle - India won by 165 runs
Team India played its historic 600th Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle, and right from Day 1, the Shubman Gill-led side dominated the Lankan Lions. Batting first, India posted 462 runs, and the Sri Lankan side crumbled and got all out for 284 runs. In reply, the Indian batters struggled and were knocked out for 193.
The hosts needed 372 runs to win, and the home team was dismissed for 206, courtesy of a brilliant bowling spell by Manav Suthar.
