Team India beat Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test at Galle to take a crucial 1-0 lead in the 2-game series. Interestingly, the star of the big win was none other than rookie Manav Suthar, who unravelled his magic with the ball.
The hosts were tasked to chase down 372 runs in the fourth innings, but their top order collapsed on single-digit scores. Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha forged a 95-run partnership to show some resistance.
But Indian bowlers managed to get the upper hand. Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 206 runs on Day 5 as India grabbed a comfortable win.
Manav Suthar shatters record books in Galle Test
Interestingly, rookie spinner Manav Suthar had a big role to play in India’s 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle. In the first innings, he grabbed 4 wickets and followed it up with a 6-wicket-haul in the second innings to complete a 10-wicket match haul.
He also bowled a triple-wicket maiden to wipe out Sri Lanka’s tail in the fourth innings. And during this sensational performance, Suthar broke a few records that made him stand out.

Manav Suthar’s Test career off to a flying start
Having said that, the Galle Test between India and Sri Lanka showed the true capabilities of Manav Suthar. The spinner made his debut against Afghanistan this year and grabbed a six-wicket-haul to announce his arrival at the international stage.
Owing to his sensational debut, Suthar got an opportunity to play in Sri Lanka, and the 24-year-old didn’t disappoint. He grabbed his career’s first 10-wicket match haul to prove himself.
So overall in just 2 Tests of his career, Manav Suthar managed to grab 17 wickets at a remarkable average of 11.35 with 2 fifers and one 10-wicket haul. Naturally, Suthar is likely to be backed on spin-friendly wickets in the long term.
Devdutt Padikkal wins Player of the Match
Meanwhile, despite his remarkable performance, Manav Suthar lost the Player of the Match award to Devdutt Padikkal. The RCB batter scored 167 in the first innings and followed it up with a crucial 44-run knock in the second innings.
His efforts with the bat helped India grab a match-winning lead that eventually contributed to their 165-run victory. Padikkal got an opportunity to play this Test after Sai Sudharsan’s injury, and he grabbed the chance with both hands.
With a 1-0 lead in the series, India will play Sri Lanka again in the second Test at Colombo on August 23.
