Bangladesh could create history in Darwin as the Asian side holds an advantage against Australia in the first Test match. Australia were ther firm favourites to defeat the Tigers in the two-match series, but Bangladesh brought their A game as the side has been the better team and could win their first-ever Test, Down Under.
The Darwin surface assisted the pacers, and Bangladesh ran riot as the Australian batters struggled against a top-quality Bangladesh bowling attack.
Bangladesh wreak havoc as Australia pushed on backfoot
Australia won the toss, and they elected to bat first. The decision backfired as the Bangladesh pacers wreaked havoc on a spicy Darwin wicket. None of the Aussie batters stood tall as Hasan Mahmud scalped 6 wickets and ran through the Aussie batters.
The home team batters surrendered, and only Steve Smith stood tall (71) as the hosts got bundled out for a mere 198, and attained several unwanted records. In reply, the visitors played maturely and applied the basics to punish the Aussie bowlers.
Tanzid Hasan became the first Bangladesh player to score a Test ton in Australia, and he was amply supported by the middle order as the Tigers took a 153-run first innings lead (at the time of writing).
Interestingly, only twice has Australia won a Test match after conceding a lead of 150-plus runs:
- AUS vs SA, Durban 1950
- AUS vs BAN, Fatullah 2006
Bangladesh have a golden chance to win their maiden Test on Australian soil, but the question arises: Have the Tigers ever defeated Australia in red-ball cricket?
Has Bangladesh ever defeated Australia in a Test match?
Before the ongoing Test match, the two teams have only played in 6 Tests, with Australia dominating the proceedings by winning five of those.

However, the only time the Tigers tasted success in red-ball cricket against Australia was during the 2017 home series. It was the first Test in Mirpur, and the Asian side prepared a spin-friendly pitch to test the visitors.
Bangladesh batted first and scored 260 runs in their first innings. Tamim Iqbal scored 71 runs, and Shakib Al Hasan scored 84 as the hosts put on a challenging total in front of the Australian batters.
The Steve Smith-led side got bundled out for just 217, with Shakib taking a fifer. In their second innings, Bangladesh scored just 221 runs, and they set a tricky target of 265 in front of the Aussies.
Despite a David Warner century, the Kangaroos failed to hold their nerve and lost the Test match by 20 runs as Bangladesh won their first-ever Test against them.
What happens to WTC points table if Bangladesh beat Australia in 1st Test?
Currently, Australia are top of the WTC points table, and already have one foot in the finals. On the other hand, the Tigers are fourth, and if they beat the hosts, that could be immense for their chances to reach the final.
If the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side does the unthinkable and wins the Darwin Test, they would remain fourth in the table, but their PCT would increase as they would close the gap with the top three sides on the table.
Australia will still remain on top of the table, but Bangladesh will get a massive boost as they will further increase the gap between them and the fifth-placed team (India).
