Veteran Bangladesh batter Mominul Haque scripted history during the first Test against Australia at Darwin. He surpassed legend Tamim Iqbal in the list of most Test runs scored for Bangladesh.
The Darwin Test began on a fruitful note for the visitors as the bowlers caused an upset in the first innings to bowl out the Aussies for just 198 runs. Only Steve Smith showed resistance, scoring 71 off 109 balls.

Meanwhile, in the second innings, Bangladesh received an early blow as opener Shadman Islam was dismissed on a modest score of 20 off 30 balls. Later, Mominul Haque joined Tanzid Tamim at the crease.
The duo stabilised the innings, stitching a 60* runs partnership for the second wicket. Meanwhile, Haque’s unbeaten 35 off 49 balls helped him achieve a significant milestone.
His overall Test runs stand at 5166, thus overtaking Tamim Iqbal to become the country’s second-highest run-scorer in Test history. The milestone becomes even more impressive considering Mominul has achieved his tally in 79 Tests, compared with Tamim’s 70.

Only Mushfiqur Rahim, with 6806 runs, remains ahead of him among Bangladesh batters. Interestingly, Mominul Haque is also the third Bangladeshi batter to score 10 Test hundreds after Tamim and Mushfiqur.

Mominul Haque’s career so far
Mominul Haque has spent most of his international career as a Test specialist, primarily batting at No. 3 or No. 4. He made his Test debut in 2013 and has established himself as one of Bangladesh's most consistent long-format batters.
One of the most remarkable periods of his early career was a run of 11 consecutive Test innings in which he scored at least 50. He became the first Bangladesh batter to score centuries in both innings of the same Test, achieving the feat against Sri Lanka in 2018.
Mominul Haque also captained Bangladesh in Tests but later quit in 2022, with Shakib Al Hasan returning to the role. Still, Haque continued to play as a specialist batter in Tests, breaking one record after another.
Hasan Mahmud dominates Australia in Darwin Test
Meanwhile, Australia were shell-shocked in the first innings of the Darwin Test against Bangladesh. Hasan Mahmud ran riot, picking up a 6-wicket-haul to bowl out the hosts on just 198 runs.
His dismissals included Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc. Apart from Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain also contributed with 2 wickets each.
Australia did show some resistance with a 56-run partnership between Smith and Alex Carey. But Bangladesh were relentless and bowled Australia out for below 200 runs. At stumps on Day 1, Bangladesh had 96 runs on the board at the loss of 1 wicket.
