Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are desperately searching for a new head coach after Stephen Fleming stepped down from the helm he held for 16 seasons with the franchise. The vacancy has drawn significant attention, with former England captain Eoin Morgan emerging as a name strongly linked to the position as of August 12, 2026.

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin stated that sources close to the franchise pointed firmly towards Morgan. Ashwin added that he expected CSK to finalise the appointment within a week of that date.

Morgan captained England to the 2019 Cricket World Cup, the country's first and only title in the format. His leadership record in the IPL is also notable: he took charge of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) partway through the 2020 season and remained captain through 2021.

In his one complete season at the helm, KKR advanced to the IPL final, where they were beaten by CSK. Despite that experience, Morgan has not taken on a head coach position at any level since retiring from playing.

Eoin Morgan's England captaincy record

Eoin Morgan was appointed as England's permanent limited-overs (ODI and T20I) captain in December 2014, replacing Alastair Cook just ahead of the 2015 Cricket World Cup. 

He had previously filled in as captain for isolated matches (first captaining the T20I side in July 2012), but took over the full-time white-ball leadership role on 19 December 2014.

Invariably, Morgan is England’s most successful white-ball captain, leading the team in 126 One Day Internationals - winning 76 and 72 Twenty20 Internationals - winning 42. His crowning achievement was captaining England to their maiden ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title in 2019.

In 2023, Eoin Morgan ended his career not only as a World Cup-winning captain and England’s leading one-day and T20 run-scorer of all time, but also the architect of a fundamental shift in English cricket which could never be replicated.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Morgan chose to play a sport which was looked down upon in his country as an English game. However, this Irish man’s impact on the game in England is unmatched and will be for a long time.

Under Morgan, England broke the world record for the highest total in a one-day international on three occasions. Before he was captain, England had passed the 300 mark 31 times in 633 ODIs. Under his leadership, it was 53 from 131.

Talking about Morgan’s style of leadership, it was simple: backing his players to the hilt and encouraging them to be aggressive no matter the situation.

At a time when English cricket has struggled with diversity, Morgan embraced and celebrated the range of backgrounds from which his team was drawn.

And why not? England's 2019 World Cup winners were led by an Irishman and also featured players born in Barbados (Jofra Archer), New Zealand (Ben Stokes) and South Africa (Jason Roy).

Eoin Morgan's IPL captaincy record

In 2020, when Dinesh Karthik stepped down, Eoin Morgan was given the responsibility to lead Kolkata Knight Riders. At the time, Morgan became only the second England international to captain an IPL franchise, after Kevin Pietersen led the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009 and the Delhi Daredevils in 2014.

Eoin Morgan captained KKR in 24 IPL matches, winning 11 and losing 12, with a win percentage of 45.83%. He took over mid-season in 2020 and famously led KKR to the IPL final in 2021 before they lost to the Chennai Super Kings.
