Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is looking for a new head coach after Stephen Fleming stepped down from his role on July 13, 2026. Fleming had been closely linked with the franchise for 18 years and played a major role in CSK’s success, including five IPL titles.
The franchise is yet to announce his replacement. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has recently indicated that the team is considering an overseas option for the important role. Several names such as Brendon McCullum, Albie Morkel and Mike Hussey are already buzzing around.
However, a fresh name has now entered the discussion. Former India and CSK spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has suggested that former England captain Eoin Morgan could be considered for the job ahead of IPL 2027.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, R Ashwin discussed the coaching situation at CSK and mentioned Eoin Morgan as a strong possibility. However, there is no official confirmation from CSK about Morgan’s appointment.

What Are The Qualities That CSK Might Look For If They Appoint Eoin Morgan As CSK’s Head Coach?
It is vital to note that Eoin Morgan would be a different choice from the traditional coaching options. While he does not have a long record as an IPL coach, he has extensive experience in leadership and strategy-making.
The former England batter captained England from December 2014 to 2022. Under his leadership, the Three Lions changed their approach and went on to win the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, their first men's 50-over World Cup title.
CSK might also look at his IPL experience, as he became the KKR captain in 2020 after Dinesh Karthik stepped down during the season.
The Yellow Army could also see Morgan's biggest strength as understanding modern white-ball cricket.
Though he may not have the coaching CV, his contribution and strong tactical mind might give CSK much-needed pointers to appoint him as the CSK’s next head coach.
When MS Dhoni openly praised Eoin Morgan in IPL
Eoin Morgan's strongest connection with CSK comes from the IPL 2021 final. KKR, led by Morgan, had made an impressive turnaround during the UAE phase and reached the final against CSK, under MS Dhoni's leadership.
After CSK won the match, Dhoni praised KKR's comeback and Morgan's team during the presentation ceremony.
"If any team deserved to win the IPL this year, I feel it was KKR".
There has also been speculation about MS Dhoni's recent conversations with possible coaching candidates. Reports have linked him with discussions involving Brendon McCullum, while there are chances that he might have spoken to Morgan.
With IPL 2027 approaching, CSK’s next decision related to the head coach could play a major role in shaping the franchise's era after Fleming.
