Vaibhav Suryavanshi has roared back into form after undergoing a couple of underwhelming outings for India Under-19. Facing Bangladesh in match number seven of the 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, Suryavanshi clattered six cracking boundaries and three huge sixes to chart a swift 72 from 67 balls.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s counterattacking knock after losing opening partner and captain Ayush Mhatre, as well as number three Vidant Trivedi and Vihaan Malhotra helped India U19 recover from 53-3 to a respectable 115-4 around 26 overs. The teenage batting sensation also attained a couple of huge records through his latest blitzkrieg against Bangladesh bowlers. Here is a look at all records broken or achieved by the 14-year-old after his explosive 72 in the U19 World Cup 2026.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi goes past Virat Kohli

Vaibhav Suryavanshi went past 2008 Under-19 World Cup-winning skipper and modern-day run machine Virat Kohli to become India’s seventh highest run-maker in youth ODIs. While Kohli concluded his Under-19 career with 978 runs, the left-handed opening batter raced past the maestro through his belligerent half-century against Bangladesh in match number seven of the 2026 edition of the tournament on Saturday, January 17.

Most runs for India in Youth ODIs:

  • Vijay Zol - 1404 runs
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal - 1386 runs
  • Tanmay Srivastava - 1316 runs
  • Shubman Gill/Unmukt Chand - 1149 runs
  • Sarfaraz Khan - 1080 runs
  • Vaibhav Suryavanshi – 1,047* runs
  • Virat Kohli - 978 runs

Vaibhav Suryavanshi joins Jaiswal, Gill and others in elite U19 list

By going past Virat Kohli, Vaibhav Suryavanshi also became only the seventh Indian cricketer to complete 1,000 runs in Youth ODIs. He has joined an elite batting list featuring the likes of Vijay Zol, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tanmay Srivastava, Shubman Gill, Unmukt Chand, Sarfaraz Khan as listed above.

Suryavanshi topples Babar Azam, Kamal as youngest to make U19 WC 50

Despite losing partners early in the game, Vaibhav Suryavanshi clobbered a breathtaking 30-ball half-century against Bangladesh Under-19 bowlers after getting invited to bat first. Remarkably, at the age of just 14 years and 296 days, the blistering left-handed opener became the youngster cricketer in the history of the Men’s Under-19 World Cup to chart a 50-plus score.

Afghanistan’s Shahidullah Kamal held the previous record by notching up a half-century during the 2014 edition. Pakistan’s modern-day legend Babar Azam now slipped to number three spot for recording an Under-19 World Cup half-century back in 2010 at the age of 15.

India vs Bangladesh U19 updates

India Under-19 team eventually bundled out for just 238 in 48.4 overs. Opening batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi (72 off 67) and wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu (80 off 112) themselves compounded 152 of those runs, with no other player offering assistance to the two half-centurions.

For Bangladesh, new ball pacer Al Fahad decimated the Indian line-up with a stunning five-wicket haul at an expense of just 38 runs in his 9.2 overs. Iqbal Hossain Emon and Azizul Hakim also chipped in with four collective wickets in their combined 18 overs, while Sheikh Parvez Jibon dismissed a well-set R Ambrish for just five.
