While batting first, Dimantha Mahavithana and Viran Chamuditha stitched an iconic 328-run partnership and shattered the record book. That match-defining partnership went on to become the highest partnership in Under-19 cricket history.
Mahavithana-Chamuditha creates history with the iconic stand
Since the Under-19 World Cup has arrived, fans across the globe are enjoying some mind-blowing fireworks from the youngsters. Every match has turned into a must-watch spectacle, but the clash between Sri Lanka U-19 and Japan U-19 took things to a whole new level. After winning the toss, Japan opted to bowl first, without imagining what was waiting for them.
Coming to open the innings, Dimantha Mahavithana and Viran Chamuditha took the charge from the first ball, and Japan felt the heat. Tightening the grips, the young batters smashed hard on the opponent completed their respective half-centuries.
As the batters were on a roll, Japan tried to break the partnership, but the duo defied the odds. Piling up the runs quickly, they turned heads with a 300-run partnership. While the world was in awe, they had more to deliver.
Before Mahavithana walked away on 115, they stitched a massive 328-run stand. In the 2016 edition of the tournament, England U-19’s Dan Lawrence and Jack Burnham stitched a 303-run stand, which stood as the highest in the U-19 World Cup history for almost a decade, but Mahavithana and Chamuditha smashed past it, rewriting Under-19 World Cup history.
Chamuditha falls just short of a dream double century
In the ongoing match, Chamuditha has become a living nightmare for the bowlers as his ruthless display traumatized them. From the very first delivery, he took charge and looked completely unstoppable, treating fans to a masterclass in stroke-making. World Cup Century is every batter’s dream, and the Sri Lankan youngster turned that into reality.
After hitting an outstanding century, the world hailed his brilliance, but he left with more fireworks. He kept the domination alive and passed the 150-run mark with ease. As the batter looked promising, the world was waiting eagerly for a stunning double-hundred on the big stage.
He was close to his double ton dream, batting on 192, and the dream was interrupted. On the very first ball of the 45th over, Moore shattered the dream, ending a breathtaking knock. He ended the stunning innings with a 143-ball 192, laced with 26 boundaries and just one six. He may have fallen short of his deserving double century by eight runs, but his brilliance captured hearts.
Sri Lanka U-19 pile on the pressure with a massive total
The beginning of the tournament can’t be better than this as the Sri Lanka Under-19 side gave a great start to their campaign. After Dimantha Mahavithana and Viran Chamuditha’s 328-run opening partnership gave a stunning start, they faced another early wicket ad Dulnith Sigera walked away scoring just five runs.
Standing at that point, Captain Vimath Dinsara took charge and played a quickfire knock of 44 runs in 24 deliveries with just one boundary and 2 boundaries. His late surge powered Sri Lanka Under-19 to a commanding total of 387, throwing down a colossal challenge to the opposition.
