Garry Sobers passed away at the age of 89 at his home in Barbados on July 17. One of the greatest all-rounders of all time, the legendary former West Indies cricketer, tragically died just a couple of weeks short of his 90th birthday.

Although the great man has taken his final bow, some of the records he left behind have gone on to become a part of cricket’s folklore and could remain untouched for generations to come. Here is a look at some of Sobers’ biggest records that will continue to live on.

1. Youngest player to score a Test triple hundred

Back in February 1958, at the age of just 21 years and 213 days, Garry Sobers became the youngest cricketer in history to score a Test triple century. The attacking left-handed batter plundered 365* runs against Pakistan in Kingston.

At the time, he surpassed Don Bradman’s 28-year-old record of scoring a triple ton in Tests at an age of 21 years and 318 days.

2. Highest maiden Test century score

Sobers also holds the record for notching up the highest individual score in history while scoring his maiden Test century. Racing past the 100-run mark for the first time in his Test career, the cricketer converted it into a grand 365*-run epic against Pakistan, the same innings which made him the format’s youngest triple centurion.

3. First player to hit six sixes in competitive cricket

Garry Sobers became the first cricketer in history to hit six sixes in a single over of a competitive game. He achieved the feat back in September 1968 while leading Nottinghamshire in a County Championship match against Glamorgan in Swansea.

The beauty of the feat is that there can only ever be one first, and that distinction will forever belong to Sobers.

4. Only player to hit six sixes in an over in County Championship

Garry Sobers also remains the only player in the history of England’s County Championship to have struck six sixes in a single over. His whirlwind knock against Glamorgan in Swansea came back in 1968, and no other overseas or even English player has replicated the feat in nearly six decades since.

It remains a strong possibility that the former West Indies all-rounder will remain the exclusive member of this small club, at least for a few more decades, if not for all time, owing to the challenging batting conditions in England and Wales.

5. Highest average for any player with over 8000 Test runs

The legendary West Indies all-rounder also holds a staggering record of maintaining the highest Test average for any player in history with over 8,000 runs to his name. The attacking left-handed batter averages an astonishing 57.78 in the format after aggregating 8,032 runs in just 160 innings spanning 93 Tests.

6. Most runs in a single Test series vs Pakistan

In the series where Garry Sobers plundered his maiden and a historic Test century, the cricketer rained down two more hundreds and three additional fifty-plus scores to aggregate 824 runs in a five-match series against Pakistan in 1957/58.

The cricketer averaged 137.33 in the series, and his aggregate continues to remain the highest for any batter in a single Test series against Pakistan

Moreover, the record also marks the seventh highest overall by any batter in Test history, and the second highest aggregate for any single series played in the West Indies.

Garry Sobers: A career to remember

Garry Sobers made his international debut for West Indies in 1954, and he went on to represent them for the next 20 years, playing 93 Tests in the process.

The legendary all-rounder minted 8,032 runs in the format at a prolific average of 57.58, charting 26 centuries and another 30 fifties. To date, he remains one of the West Indies’ most successful batters and century-makers in history.

He also picked up 235 wickets with the ball in just 159 innings at an average of 34.03.

All in all, Sobers left behind a legacy that transcends numbers, with many of his extraordinary records standing as timeless reminders of a career that may never be replicated.
