In a phenomenal achievement, Sarfaraz Khan etched his name in history books as soon as he completed his double hundred in the Ranji Trophy. The experienced cricketer notched up another double ton in the tournament, entering a rare list of batters who have a List-A 150, a T20 hundred, and a First-Class double century in the same domestic season. Sarfaraz Khan finished his innings on 227 runs, powering Mumbai to a mammoth first innings total of 560 runs.

Coming at number five, Sarfaraz hammered nineteen boundaries and nine sixes during his 219-ball stay. His marvellous knock not only helped Mumbai to take the upper hand over Hyderabad but also placed him in a rare list of batters.

Sarfaraz Khan achieves rare feat with Ranji Trophy double ton

Sarfaraz Khan had a shaky start to the Ranji Trophy 2025-26, registering a string of low scores. Although he got starts on three occasions, the batter failed to make them count, managing 178 runs in his first seven outings. However, Mumbai's recent clash against Hyderabad witnessed his redemption, as the batter went on to pile up a sensational double hundred.

Hailed for his consistency in the format, Sarfaraz thus smashed his first double ton of the 2025-26 domestic season. He thereby entered a rare list of batters who have a double ton, a 150-plus score, and a century in First-Class, List-A, and T20 formats, respectively, in the same season.

Although Mumbai failed to qualify for the final, Sarfaraz Khan came out all guns blazing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring 303 runs in five innings at an average of 75.75 and a strike rate of 190.57. He struck a power-packed 157-run knock off just 75 deliveries when Mumbai faced Goa in the competition.

Before setting the Vijay Hazare Trophy on fire with his batting exploits, Sarfaraz had oozed his class in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He hammered a belligerent century against Assam, while also recording a few more impactful scores, including three fifties, against Kerala, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

Which players, apart from Sarfaraz, find a place in the list?

Sarfaraz Khan is India's first-ever and overall third batter to achieve the aforementioned feat. The list already comprised England's Daniel Bell-Drummond and Alex Hales. While Bell-Drummond did it twice- in 2016 and 2023- Hales attained a similar milestone following his stunning returns in the 2017 English domestic season.

Sarfaraz Khan presents a strong case for Test comeback

Sarfaraz Khan was sidelined from India's Test plans after the tourists suffered an embarrassing defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under. Despite consistently proving his mettle in the domestic circuit, the Mumbaikar has failed to receive a Test recall ever since.

However, considering the Gautam Gambhir-led Indian management is still searching for reliable middle-order batters, Sarfaraz Khan can be an excellent addition to the Indian Test setup. As he has shown his readiness for the purest format, it will be interesting to see whether India bring him back into the Test side, with a WTC elimination looming large.
