REVEALED: How much money will Bangladesh lose for boycotting T20 World Cup 2026?

On Thursday, the Bangladesh government made it clear that it wouldn't send the national team players to India for the T20 World Cup 2026. Youth and Sports Ministry adviser Asif Nazrul stated that Bangladesh can't play its T20 World Cup matches in India for security reasons, and requested that the ICC relocate the Tigers' group-stage games to Sri Lanka.

However, given that the ICC had already issued an ultimatum to the BCB, the government's rigid stance on the matter has undoubtedly jeopardised Bangladesh's T20 World Cup campaign. As things stand, the ICC could expel Bangladesh from the showpiece event and replace it with Scotland at any time.

If that happens, Bangladesh won't receive its share of the revenue, which it would've got upon participating in the T20 World Cup. This could lead the Bangladesh Cricket Board to a huge financial loss and hamper the cricketing infrastructure in the country.

Bangladesh to lose 240 Crores after boycotting T20 World Cup 2026

According to PTI, if Bangladesh doesn't feature in the T20 World Cup 2026, it could lose a substantial amount of 27 million dollars, which translates into a whopping 240 crores in Indian currency. This includes both broadcast and sponsorship revenues that Bangladesh will receive if the ICC miraculously changes its mind and shifts the Tigers' group-stage matches from India to Sri Lanka.

The loss of such a massive amount could put the Bangladesh Cricket Board in a major financial crisis, as it accounts for almost 60 per cent of its annual revenue. Thus, if Bangladesh officially gets sidelined from the event, the BCB's financial loss could adversely affect the cricketers as well as the cricketing infrastructure in the country at the grassroots level.

Why is Bangladesh opposing to play T20 World Cup in India?

The geopolitical relation between India and Bangladesh steadily worsened after the Muhammad Yunus-led party displaced Sheikh Hasina's government. It eventually affected the cricketing ties between India and Bangladesh, with the BCCI abruptly terminating Mustafizur Rahman's IPL contract following the mob lynching of a Bangladeshi Hindu citizen over religious remarks.

As a result, the BCB, backed by the Bangladesh government, refused to travel to India for the T20 World Cup, citing security reasons. Despite the ICC delegation committee expressing its satisfaction at the security arrangements in India, Bangladesh hasn't changed its stance, maintaining its stand-off with the apex body.

According to the latest update, the ICC has given a 24-hour period to Bangladesh, hoping for a sensible solution to the problem.

Scotland to come in if Bangladesh opts out

If the ICC officially excludes Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup, Scotland will replace the Tigers and face England, Italy, Nepal, and the West Indies in the C matches. Bangladesh was slated to take on the West Indies, Italy, and England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on February 7, 9, and 14, respectively. Meanwhile, their final group-stage clash against Nepal was to be held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 17.
