Royal Challengers Bengaluru created history when they played against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 34th match of the IPL at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday, April 24.
To begin with, Gujarat Titans were asked to bat first, and they made the most of the opportunity by scoring a big total of 205 runs.
Although the opening pair of Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill started slowly, they gradually increased their scoring pace. As a result, they built a strong partnership of 128 runs for the first wicket.
Gujarat Titans post a daunting target
Even though Shubman Gill got out for 32 runs, Sai Sudharsan continued playing aggressively. Notably, he scored a stunning century, reaching 100 runs and becoming only the second GT player after Gill to achieve this milestone.
However, after Sudharsan got out, the momentum slowed down because RCB bowlers tightened their grip and did not allow many boundaries.
Towards the end, GT debutant Jason Holder played a quick and impactful innings, scoring 23 runs off just 10 balls, which helped the team reach 205.
RCB’s chase begins with a setback
In response, Bengaluru started their chase of 206 runs but faced an early setback. Mohammed Siraj dismissed opener Jacob Bethell quickly, leaving them at 26/1 in just three overs. However, after this early trouble, the top-order batters stepped up and handled the pressure well.
Virat Kohli played a key role by scoring 81 runs off 44 balls, setting the tone for the chase. Alongside him, Devdutt Padikkal played an excellent innings of 55 runs from just 27 balls. Moreover, the pair built a strong partnership of 115 runs in only 59 balls, which kept them in control of the game.
After the dismissal of Kohli and Padikkal, the match became tense. Rashid Khan and Manav Suthar picked up important wickets, which slowed down RCB’s progress. As a result, the defending champions found themselves at 175/5 after 16 overs. Soon after, they lost Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma.
RCB seal the win in 18.5 overs
With 31 runs needed in the last four overs, the game was still open. However, Krunal Pandya played a match-winning knock. He remained unbeaten on 23 runs from 12 balls and attacked the bowlers confidently. In addition, Tim David supported him with a small but useful innings.
Importantly, Krunal scored 15 runs in the 18th over, which almost sealed the match. Finally, in the 19th over, he hit the winning run and helped RCB reach 206/5 in 18.5 overs.
