Pakistan will look to turn the page when they begin their highly anticipated tour of England, with the first Test scheduled to be played at Headingley, Leeds, from August 19. The Pakistan tour of England 2026 comprises three Test matches, with the second Test set to be played at Lord's before the series concludes at Edgbaston.

The series carries enormous significance for Pakistan, who arrive in England as underdogs after a prolonged period of instability in Test cricket. They have lost 13 of their last 18 Tests and recently ended an eight-match losing streak away from home.

The return of Babar Azam to the Test captaincy has added another layer of intrigue to the tour, although the batter remains a doubt for the opening Test.

England, meanwhile, are also entering a period of transition. They have parted ways with their coach and are preparing for a new era, while their recent Test results have been far from convincing.

As the stage is set for the PAK vs ENG 1st Test, starting on August 19, here's a detailed account of Pakistan's Test record in England.

Pakistan's Test record in England: How have the Pakistani sides fared?

Pakistan's Test record in England reveals a fascinating yet inconsistent history. The visitors have played 58 Tests on English soil, winning 13, losing 25 and drawing 20. They have therefore recorded a win percentage of 22.41 in England.

Pakistan's record becomes particularly interesting when the series results are considered. They have won only three Test series in England, with all three victories coming between 1987 and 1996.

England, on the other hand, have won eight of the 16 Test series played between the two teams in England, while five series have ended in draws.

The last time Pakistan won a Test series in England was in 1996, when Wasim Akram's side secured a 2-0 victory in a three-match series. Since then, Pakistan have toured England on six occasions and have failed to win a series.

Their most recent Test tour of England came in 2020, when England won the three-match series 1-0, with the remaining two Tests ending in draws.

Pakistan's strongest record in England has traditionally come at the three most iconic venues, Lord's, and The Oval.

The visitors have played 16 Tests at Lord's, winning five, losing five and drawing six. The Oval has produced an identical five victories for Pakistan, although they have played 10 matches at the south London venue, compared to 15 at Lord's.

Pakistan's five wins at Lord's include their famous 10-wicket victory in 1982 under Imran Khan, their dramatic two-wicket triumph in 1992 and their 75-run victory in the 2016 series. The Oval has also been a happy hunting ground. Pakistan won there in 1954, 1992, 1996, 2010 and 2016.

Headingley, which will host the opening Test of the 2026 series, has not been particularly kind to Pakistan. They have played 10 Tests at the Leeds venue, winning just once, losing six and drawing three. Their only victory came in 1987, when Imran Khan's Pakistan defeated England by an innings and 18 runs.

Edgbaston has been even more challenging. Pakistan have played eight Tests in Birmingham without winning one, suffering five defeats and recording three draws.

Old Trafford has produced one win, three defeats and three draws for Pakistan, while Trent Bridge has seen three Pakistan defeats and one draw. The Rose Bowl in Southampton has hosted two Pakistan Tests, producing two draws.

Thus, Lord's and The Oval remain Pakistan's two most successful English venues, while Headingley and Edgbaston will present a significantly tougher challenge.

The era When Pakistan dominated England

Pakistan's Test record in England takes a dramatic turn when the period between 1987 and 2001 is isolated.

After England dominated much of the rivalry in the first three decades, Pakistan finally broke through under Imran Khan in 1987. The five-Test series ended 1-0 in Pakistan's favour, with four matches drawn. Their victory at Headingley, where they won by an innings and 18 runs, proved decisive.

Pakistan then continued their remarkable run in 1992. The visitors won the five-Test series 2-1, with Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram and the rest of the Pakistan side playing pivotal roles. They followed that up with another historic triumph in 1996, winning the three-Test series 2-0.

The numbers during this period underline Pakistan's dominance. From 1987 to 2001, Pakistan played 16 Tests in England, winning seven, losing two and drawing seven. They therefore went unbeaten in 14 of those 16 matches.

[Pakistan's Test Record In England vs England through decades]

The success was built around a combination of world-class fast bowling, experienced campaigners and familiarity with English conditions.

Imran Khan's generation had developed the ability to exploit seam movement, swing and variable bounce, while Pakistan's fast-bowling legacy only grew stronger with the emergence of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.

County cricket also played an important role. Several Pakistani cricketers gained extensive experience in England, allowing them to become familiar with the weather, pitches and Dukes ball. That exposure helped Pakistan overcome some of the traditional challenges faced by Asian teams in English conditions.

The result was one of the most successful periods Pakistan have ever enjoyed in England. However, that golden era eventually came to an end. After the 1996 series victory, Pakistan have won only three Tests in England and have not won another series.

Biggest challenges for Pakistan in England on 2026 tour

The Pakistan tour of England 2026 represents a major opportunity for the visitors, but their current circumstances make the task extremely difficult.

Their biggest concern is their batting. Pakistan have struggled to absorb pressure in the third and fourth innings, while injuries have further complicated their preparations. Babar Azam's fitness remains a major concern ahead of the opening Test.

The bowling attack, however, could provide Pakistan with a genuine advantage. Mohammad Abbas is particularly well suited to English conditions. Having taken more than 300 wickets in county cricket, Abbas possesses extensive experience of the conditions that await Pakistan at Headingley.

Pakistan's other challenge will be England's batting quality. Joe Root remains one of the greatest Test batters of his generation, while Harry Brook has enjoyed an extraordinary record against Pakistan.

The venues could also influence the series. Headingley is historically one of Pakistan's weaker grounds, while Lord's has provided them with considerably more success. If the weather remains dry as the series moves towards London and Birmingham, Pakistan's spinners could also become increasingly important.
