New Zealand created a shameful record [Source: AFP]
As the Indian cricket team is hopeful of clinching the five-match ODI series against New Zealand in the third ODI, the hosts have now bagged an unprecedented and shameful record as a team.
After India won the second ODI match against New Zealand due to the DLS method after rain interrupted the match several times, New Zealand created a record for having the most number of defeats against an opponent in a calendar year.
India’s dominance results in a shameful record for New Zealand
New Zealand have now lost 11 matches across formats in 2026 against India. This record now tops the chart for the team losing against an opponent multiple times in a calendar year.
The 11 defeats against India now sit at the top of the list, surpassing their previous record of 10 losses against Australia in 2005 and nine losses against England back in 2008.
Most defeats for New Zealand against an opponent in a calendar year
- 11* vs India in 2026
- 10 vs Australia in 2005
- 9 vs England in 2008
This means the defeats against India have now brought up a shameful record that had remained untouched for almost 21 years after 10 losses against Australia in 2005.
New Zealand have so far played four series against India this year, with the ICC Men's T20 World Cup match included. The year began in their favour, with Kiwis winning the ODI series in January, winning two matches of the three-match series.
However, India bounced back in the T20I games, securing four wins in the five-match series. In the T20 World Cup 2026 final, New Zealand faced India and were defeated considerably. Recently, in the New Zealand T20I series, the hosts bagged three defeats, adding to the two defeats in the ODI series.
New Zealand’s massive dip in performance at home
Significantly enough, this year hasn't been quite good for New Zealand even at home. Across formats, the Kiwis have played 12 matches but have managed to win only four of them while losing eight games, courtesy of India's dominance in the country.
Against South Africa too, New Zealand were suppressed. The T20I series played back in March saw the hosts pinned down after South Africa clinched the series with a 3-2 win. Overall, this year, at home, New Zealand boasts a win-to-loss ratio of only 0.5.
Contrary to this, just a year ago, New Zealand won 20 matches out of the 32 games they hosted at home across formats while losing only seven, with a massive win-to-loss ratio of 2.857.
