Dasun Shanaka, the 34-year-old Sri Lankan all-rounder, has created history with the bat in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League.
Representing the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Shanaka, who is a well-known overseas franchise player, smashed 120 runs off 43 deliveries against the St Lucia Kings on September 4 to achieve a massive feat that no batter had ever achieved in the CPL.
Shanaka's massive milestone comes after a series of decent knocks with the bat. While his tournament didn't start with flashy innings, he has now played a sensational knock for the Patriots when it mattered the most.
Dasun Shanaka bags CPL world record with 39-ball hundred
In the match at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts, Dasun Shanaka was unrecognisable with the bat. He came in to salvage the innings at 89 for 2 after Johnson Charles was dismissed and then launched an aggressive assault against the Saint Lucia Kings bowlers.
Shanaka smashed his fifty in just 24 deliveries before reaching his hundred off 39 balls, which is also the fastest century ever scored by a batter in CPL history.

Earlier, just a few days ago, Shimron Hetmyer came close to breaking the record as he joined an elite list alongside Tim Seifert and Andre Russell for the joint-fastest century in CPL history, reaching the milestone in 40 deliveries.
However, Shanaka has now breached all these previous milestones to top the chart, while also ensuring a dominating finish for his team, with St Kitts putting up a total of 235 runs on the board at the end of 20 overs.

How does Shanaka's century fare against other fastest T20 hundreds recorded in the world?
Although Shanaka has achieved a feat like no other in the Caribbean Premier League, his record moves away from the limelight when compared with the fastest centuries recorded in domestic and franchise T20 leagues across the world.
The fastest hundred in T20s was achieved by Sahil Chauhan, who smashed a 27-ball century in 2024 while representing Estonia against Cyprus.
The feat remains a world record in T20 cricket, followed by Urvil Patel's 28-ball century in Indore in the same year, when he achieved the feat against Tripura while playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Names like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma have also impressed with their 32-ball hundreds, representing India A and Punjab, respectively, with almost 12 players having achieved the 39-ball hundred feat in T20 cricket alongside Shanaka.
When it comes to international cricket, Sahil Chauhan still reigns as the leader with his 27-ball century against Cyprus, while four cricketers, namely Phil Salt, Johnson Charles, Zishan Kukikhel and Periyalwar, have smashed 39-ball hundreds in T20 internationals while representing their respective national teams.
Interestingly enough, Dasun Shanaka's 39-ball hundred isn't the only fastest century scored by a cricketer at Warner Park in Basseterre.
In July 2025, Tim David smashed a 37-ball century at the ground against the West Indies while playing in a T20I series. He scored 102 runs off 37 deliveries, propelling Australia to a successful chase of a 250-run target.
How Has Shanaka Fared as a Franchise Cricket Player?
So far, Dasun Shanaka has played in multiple franchise cricket leagues as a 34-year-old all-rounder who can bowl fast and is also a valuable middle-order batter. Besides the CPL, Shanaka has also played in Major League Cricket, the IPL, ILT20, BPL and PSL.
In the IPL, Shanaka represented Rajasthan Royals in the latest 2026 edition. However, he wasn't productive enough, scoring only 63 runs from seven innings. Meanwhile, with the ball, he managed only one wicket from the six overs he bowled.
His most recent stint, though, was in the Lanka Premier League, where he averaged 37.83 from 11 innings while taking four wickets with the ball. His MLC season was just at par as well, with only the CPL being the highlight of his recent exploits, as he is currently averaging 85.00 from his six innings at a strike rate of 229.73.
