Shimron Hetmyer produced one of the most explosive knocks of CPL 2026, turning a promising Guyana Amazon Warriors innings into a full-blown run-fest against Trinbago Knight Riders. Coming in after Guyana had lost wickets early, Hetmyer launched an extraordinary counterattack, smashing 111* off just 43 balls.

His assault took him to a landmark century in only 40 deliveries. The innings also marked a significant turnaround for a batter who had endured a difficult few months across franchise cricket, since IPL 2026.

Hetmyer effectively matched the fastest hundred ever recorded in the Caribbean Premier League. The Guyana batter reached his century in just 40 balls, joining Tim Seifert and Andre Russell at the top of the CPL's fastest-centuries list. 

His 43-ball stay produced eight fours and nine sixes, meaning 86 of his 111 runs came in boundaries. His strike rate of 258.14 illustrated how damaging he has been on Trinbago bowlers.

The start, however, was hardly ideal for Guyana. Glenn Phillips fell for a four-ball duck before Shai Hope departed with the score on 19. Matthew Nandu's 13-ball 21 gave the innings some stability, but Guyana were still only 67/3 when he retired out in the ninth over.

How Shimron Hetmyer reached the massive milestone?

That was when Hetmyer began changing the complexion of the TKR vs GAW CPL match. He first combined with Hope in an 81-run partnership before shifting gears completely after Mohammad Nabi joined him. 

Their seven-ball boundary burst helped Guyana cross 100 in the 12th over, and Hetmyer then tore into the Trinbago attack alongside Quentin Sampson and Romario Shepherd.

The final stages were particularly brutal. Shimron Hetmyer and Shepherd added an unbeaten 45 runs from only 13 balls, with Shepherd contributing 27 off seven. Guyana eventually reached 185/5 from their 16 overs.

The number that will remain attached to Hetmyer's name, though, is 40. Russell and Seifert had previously established the benchmark, and Hetmyer's extraordinary assault means the CPL now has three batters sharing its fastest-century record, followed by Shai Hope for his 41-ball ton.

What makes Hetmyer's record even more striking is the road he travelled to reach it. His IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals was a major concern, with Hetmyer managing only 78 runs from seven innings at an average of 13 and a strike rate of 113.04. 

He failed to score more than 22 in any of those appearances, offering little indication that an innings of this magnitude was around the corner.

His struggles continued, to an extent, in Major League Cricket. Playing for Seattle Orcas, Hetmyer scored 164 runs in 10 innings at an average of 20.50, although a 33-ball 79 against Washington Freedom provided a reminder of the destructive batter still lurking underneath the poor numbers.

Even his international T20I returns for West Indies during the Sri Lanka series were modest. 85 runs across three innings. The CPL, however, has brought a completely different version of Hetmyer to the surface.

Before his record-breaking ton, he had already shown signs of recovery. He scored 25 off 11 balls against Saint Lucia Kings and followed it with 49 off 19 against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. Across four CPL innings, he has now accumulated 186 runs at an average of 93.00, with a staggering strike rate of 248.00.

Nevertheless, for Guyana, Shimron Hetmyer's comeback arrived at the perfect moment. For the Caribbean all-rounder, it may be the innings that finally turns a difficult 2026 campaign back in his favour.
