Who thought that Australia would lose a Test match against Bangladesh at home? Before the first Test match in Darwin, the hosts were the favourites to seal the win, but a resilient Bangladesh team came out of nowhere as the visitors sealed a famous 9-wicket win to take a 1-0 lead.

This was Bangladesh’s maiden Test win on Australian soil, and surprisingly, it took them only three Test matches to attain the feat as the Australian side crumbled in front of a terrific team led by Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Bangladesh needed just 57 runs to defeat the Aussies, and they attained the target without breaking a sweat as the Asian side created history and strengthened their position in the WTC points table.

After the defeat, the hosts suffered a dent, and here is the list of all unwanted records achieved by Pat Cummins’ team in Darwin.

1) First home Test defeat to an Asian team other than India in 31 years

Australia have lost a home Test to an Asian team other than India for the first time in 31 years, since 1995. It was Pakistan who defeated Australia in the 3rd Test in 1995, and since then, India have been the only Asian team to have defeated the Aussies before Bangladesh joined the party.

2) Bangladesh break India's massive record in Australia

Bangladesh become the fastest Asian team to win a Test in Australia. Bangladesh took only three Tests to secure their first win in the format in Australia. Among the Asian powerhouses, Pakistan were the quickest to win their first Test on Australian soil, having achieved the feat in their seventh attempt. 

Meanwhile, India won their first Test match in Australia in their 12th attempt.

Hasan Mahmud, Mehidy Miraz wreak havoc to stun Australia

Australia elected to bat first after winning the toss, and the decision came back to haunt the Kangaroos as Hasan Mahmud, the Bangladesh seamer, ran riot with the ball.

The pacer scalped 6 for 55 as the Australian batters crumbled in front of him. Only Steve Smith stood tall, and the rest of the batters struggled to score runs.

In reply, Tanzid Hasan became the first Bangladesh batter to score a Test ton in Australia before Mehidy Hasan Miraz spun his web and bagged 5 for 66 in the second innings to almost seal the win for his side.

A target of 57 was reached rather easily as Bangladesh won the first Test match in Darwin by 9 wickets to take a lead in the series.

Bangladesh strengthen position WTC points table

The win over Australia has further strengthened Bangladesh’s position in the WTC points table. They were already fourth before the first Test, and while their position remains the same, their PCT has increased significantly.

Their PCT was 58 before the first Test, but after the massive win, the percentage has increased to 66.67, and it has helped them get closer to their maiden WTC final.
