Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka has been subjected to some severe social media trolling from online cricket fans. Interestingly, the chairperson of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group recently mispronounced the name of former Australian captain and champion cricketer Meg Lanning, calling her ‘Meg Canning’ instead while revealing new signings for the Manchester Super Giants (MSG) franchise.

It is worth noting that the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group had acquired major stakes in the Manchester Originals last year, and the franchise has now been rebranded to the Manchester Super Giants ahead of the upcoming 2026 edition of The Hundred.

Fans troll Sanjiv Goenka for mispronouncing Australia legend

Earlier this week, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka announced the first batch of signings for the rebranded Manchester Super Giants franchise for the upcoming 2026 The Hundred season. While cricketers like Heinrich Klaasen, Jos Buttler, Noor Ahmad and Liam Dawson were either retained or roped into the men’s team by the franchise, the MSG also confirmed the signings of prolific Indian opener Smriti Mandhana and multi-World Cup winner Meg Lanning in the women’s team.

As it turned out, while announcing the new women’s recruits on Manchester Super Giants social media platform, Sanjiv Goenka referred Meg Lanning as ‘Meg Canning’ instead, even though the subtitles displayed the right name.

Moreover, the LSG and MSG owner also described ace England spinner Sophie Ecclestone, one of the best spin bowlers in the world at the moment, as merely a “good spinner”.

Fans did not go easy on Sanjiv Goenka, with several Indian cricket as well as Hundred enthusiasts from England taking to social media to mock the gaffe, questioning the casual mispronunciation of a global icon’s name and the apparent lack of familiarity with some of the sport’s biggest stars.

Let’s take a look at how netizens reacted to Sanjiv Goenka’s Manchester Super Giants goof-ups:

Meg Lanning’s legacy and new chapter with MSG

Former Australian captain Meg Lanning was part of Australia’s ODI World Cup winning teams in 2013 and 2022, winning the latter of the two as captain of the side in New Zealand. She is also a five-time T20 World Cup winner, including several as captain, and led the Australian side to Commonwealth Games gold in 2022 in Birmingham.

A veteran of six Tests, 103 ODIs and 132 T20I matches, Meg Lanning announced her retirement from international cricket in late 2023.

Since her retirement, the legendary Australian batter has been an active member in T20 franchise leagues like the WPL in India, and The Hundred in England. After representing London Spirit in 2024, and the Oval Invincibles last year, Meg Lanning has now been recruited by Sanjiv Goenka to turn up for the Manchester Super Giants in the upcoming 2026 The Hundred season.

As of now, the Melbourne Stars legend is leading the UP Warriorz franchise in the ongoing WPL 2026 in India. She was roped in by the Warriorz after getting released by the Delhi Capitals late last year, despite leading the Capitals to three successive WPL finals between 2023 and 2025.
