Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has appointed former Australian fast bowler Ian Harvey as the bowling coach of the Nepal men’s cricket team before the upcoming 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next month. The 2003 World Cup winner will be joining fellow Australian cricketer Stuart Law in the Nepal coaching staff.
Ian Harvey, a veteran of 73 ODIs for Australia during his playing days, has previously coached the Gloucestershire County Cricket Club in the 2015 English domestic home season.
Nepal rope in Australia’s World Cup winner as bowling coach
Former Australian cricketer Ian Harvey has joined the Nepal cricket team as their new bowling consultant coach before the upcoming 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The Nepal cricket board confirmed the development on Thursday, January 15; i.e., roughly three weeks prior to the showpiece event in India and Sri Lanka next month.
Another former Australian cricketer, Stuart Law, is currently serving the Nepal cricket team as its head coach, thus giving the side a distinctly Australian flavour in its coaching setup heading into the T20 World Cup.
Nonetheless, Ian Harvey has played 73 ODIs for Australia between the years 1997 and 2004. Moreover, the star all-rounder was also a part of the Australian team that lifted the 2003 ICC ODI World Cup in South Africa. In 51 ODI innings, Harvey aggregated 715 runs at a strike rate of nearly 90, and picked up 85 wickets at a bowling average of 30.31.
He also holds a T20 profile of 54 matches, and made his format debut for Gloucestershire in England’s 2003 T20 Cup. The attacking right-handed batter became the first cricketer in England's revolutionary league to score a century. He also won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award in the inaugural edition of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) in 2007 for the Chennai Superstars, having scored 266 runs with the added bonus of nine wickets.
In 2015, Ian Harvey re-joined the Gloucestershire cricket club, albeit as their assistant coach.
Nepal's T20 World Cup 2026 schedule
The Nepal cricket team qualified for the upcoming 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by winning the 2025 Men's T20 World Cup Asia–EAP Regional Final last October in Oman. The outcome marked Nepal’s only third qualification in a T20 World Cup after the 2014 and 2024 editions of the tournament.
Earlier this month, CAN named a strong 15-player Nepal squad for the competition, with Rohit Paudel reprising his role as team captain. Under the leadership of Paudel, Nepal is scheduled to face two-time winners England in their opening match of the competition at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 8.
The Nepal cricket team is placed in Group C of the 2026 T20 World Cup alongside England, Italy, Bangladesh and T20 heavyweights West Indies. Following their England clash, Nepal will go up against Italy on February 12 and against West Indies on February 15. The team will eventually cap its Group C campaign with a match against Bangladesh a couple of days later on February 17. All of Nepal’s T20 World Cup Group C fixtures will be hosted by the iconic Mumbai-based venue.
