Kolkata Knight Riders have officially signed Luvnith Sisodia as a replacement player for the remainder of IPL 2026 following the injury setback suffered by Matheesha Pathirana.

The move comes after what turned out to be one of the most unfortunate and expensive injury heartbreaks of the season. Bought for a massive ₹18 crore during the IPL 2026 auction, Pathirana was expected to solve KKR’s long-standing death bowling concerns.

However, recurring hamstring troubles completely derailed his campaign, limiting him to just eight balls in the tournament. With KKR still battling for playoff qualification ahead of their final league clash against Delhi Capitals on May 24.

The Injury-Marred IPL 2026 Of Matheesha Pathirana

Pathirana’s nightmare season actually began months before IPL 2026 started. During the T20 World Cup in February 2026, the Sri Lankan speedster suffered a severe left calf and hamstring injury while bowling against Australia in Kandy.

The injury occurred after just four deliveries as the slinger suddenly pulled up in pain before collapsing on the field.

The injury proved serious enough to rule him out of the remainder of the T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka Cricket’s medical staff then placed him under a lengthy rehabilitation process, which forced him to miss the opening 13 matches of IPL 2026 for KKR.

After spending more than three months recovering, Pathirana finally received clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket and KKR’s medical team. His long-awaited debut eventually came against Gujarat Titans as an Impact Player.

Heartbreaks After Heartbreak

However, the comeback quickly turned into another heartbreak. Pathirana bowled only eight deliveries before experiencing discomfort around the same hamstring area during his second over.

Despite receiving treatment from the physio, the pacer failed to continue properly and walked off after a brief conversation with KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane.

The recurring injury subsequently ruled him out of further matches, including the crucial encounter against the Mumbai Indians.

Performances Couldn’t Make A Deep Mark

KKR had invested heavily in Pathirana due to his exceptional reputation as a death-over specialist in franchise cricket. But IPL 2026 never truly started for the Sri Lankan star.

Instead of leading KKR’s bowling attack, Pathirana spent most of the season recovering and managing rehabilitation schedules.

The fact that his ₹18 crore campaign lasted just eight balls made it one of the biggest injury-related disappointments in IPL history.

KKR entered the season hoping Matheesha Pathirana could become their X-factor in pressure situations, but the franchise barely got to use him.

This had the internet roast the Sri Lankan for his limited appearance:

With the playoffs race heating up, KKR were eventually forced to search for a replacement option capable of adding flexibility to the squad.

Luvnith Sisodia Signed In By KKR

KKR have now turned towards Karnataka wicketkeeper-batter Luvnith Sisodia as Pathirana’s replacement for the remainder of the season.

Sisodia is regarded as an aggressive left-handed batter who can attack heavily during the powerplay overs. The Bengaluru-born cricketer first grabbed attention in 2021 after smashing 312 runs off just 129 balls in a local 50-over tournament innings that included 26 fours and 26 sixes.

The wicketkeeper-batter was previously picked up by Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the IPL 2022 auction before later joining KKR.

In domestic cricket, Sisodia has impressed consistently in the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 competition while representing teams like Hubli Tigers and Gulbarga Mystics.

He also showcased his aggressive batting recently during the 2026 DY Patil T20 Cup, where he hammered 76 runs off just 39 deliveries for Canara Bank.

KKR appear to have signed him mainly as a backup Indian batting option who can provide depth and attacking intent if required.

Conclusion: Will Luvnith Sisodia Be An Effective Replacement?

From a direct cricketing perspective, Sisodia cannot replace Pathirana’s bowling qualities because both players operate in completely different roles.

Pathirana was expected to be KKR’s specialist death bowler, while Luvnith Sisodia is primarily a top-order wicketkeeper-batter.

However, Sisodia could still become a smart tactical addition for KKR because Indian batting depth remains extremely important during the latter stages of IPL campaigns. His approach might give KKR an additional impact option if they qualify for the playoffs.

Hence, Sisodia may add value as a squad player, but replacing the overall impact and expectations attached to Pathirana remains nearly impossible.
